Robert Parker Coffin Recalls Fighting for Open Space

Living local legend Robert Parker Coffin, 95, returned to Long Grove this week to reminisce about the history of the village, fighting for open space and witnessing the growth of surrounding suburbs.

Robert Parker Coffin served as village president of Long Grove for 20 years, plus two years as a trustee, starting in 1946. Then, he spent another 20 years on the village's Plan Commision. Today, he and his wife of 68 years, Betty, live in Lake Forest. They are filled with living history. Coffin, an architect and engineer, helped develop Long Grove's Master Plan. He designed the original covered bridge in Long Grove, and has a main thoroughfare that runs through town named for him. Locals still ask about him. Ela Historical Society Holds its Own 'Roadshow'

The Ela Historical Society welcomed antiques appraiser Penny Welch, who appraised guests' treasures on Sunday.

Nancy Loomis Schroeder sat at a table in the Ela Historical Society, patiently awaiting her turn to find out what her antiques are worth. She was most interested in learning about a box - possibly 228 years old - that was brought to the United States from England by an ancestor. She also brought along a pistol mounted on wood and a box of her mother's jewelry. "My mother loved jewelry. She passed away in 2008 and we have no idea what (the jewelry) is worth," said Schroeder, past president of the Ela Historical Society. "I just want (the appraiser) to maybe look at stand say, 'This looks interesting.'" The Ela Historical Society transformed into an "Antiques Roadshow"-type event Sunday, as visitors dropped in to get their antiques appraised…

Ela Historical Society to Host First Appraisal Event

Penny Welch from Long Grove will appraise visitors' antiques from 2-4 p.m. Sunday.

Coral Lee Scranton knows exactly what she'll be bringing to the Ela Historical Society's first annual antique appraisal event. She hopes to learn the value of an old beaded, satin cape she found in her aunt's hope chest. She's also bringing along her great-great-granmother's pin and earrings. "It's our own 'Roadshow,'" said Scranton, the director of the Ela Historical Society, likening the event to the popular "Antiques Roadshow" TV program. The antique appraisal event will feature certified appraiser Penny Welch from The Emporium in Long Grove. Scranton said people can bring in their antique treasure or collection, excluding art and furniture, for Welch to examine. "It's just to get more people involved so they know what we're about," …
