Wrestlers from Lake Zurich Middle School North and Middle School South are ready to battle in the state tournament March 8-9.
Junior wrestlers from Lake Zurich made it through to the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournament. The event will be held March 8-9 in the Convocation Center on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Boys from both Middle School North and Middle School South qualified for state after advancing through sectionals at Wauconda Middle School on March 2. Boys from Lake Zurich Middle School North will compete in sectionals March 2, as their coach plans to retire at the end of the season.
Wrestlers from Middle School North in Lake Zurich who qualified for the IESA Sectionals know the importance of this event. Some say it is more important who they are competing for - their coach Terry Kivisto, who will retire after this season after coaching for 25 years. Kivisto led 14 of the 26 wrestlers on the team of sixth- to eight-graders to sectionals this year. But even more than the success in competition, parents say the coach is known for how he inspires the kids to succeed in life. "Coach Terry started the wrestling program here, and he is all about the kids," said parent Aleyce Baca. "He pours out his heart and soul into the kids. The kids want to do well for him. Lake Zurich High School's Sean Lynch qualified for the state wrestling tournament this weekend after placing first at the Barrington sectional meet, according to IHSA results. At 152 pounds, the Lake Zurich High School junior will now compete at the state tournament, which will be held Feb. 14 to 16 at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

The Lake Zurich High School wrestling team is hosting a very important meet this weekend. The top three individuals will advance into sectionals at Barrington next weekend, and the team champion will head to the dual-team sectional, the Daily Herald reports. Lake Zurich will face off against Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove, Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Palatine and Stevenson. The Daily Herald reports Gresh Henderson is the Lake Zurich wrestler to watch in the 132-pound weight class with a record of 32-5. The state individual tournament will be held Feb. 14-16 in Champaign, while the dual-team state tournament is scheduled for Feb. 23 in Bloomington. The Feb. 2 meet starts at 9 a.m.

Seven Lake Zurich Middle School South wrestlers will compete in the Illinois Elementary School Association state individual wrestling tournament this weekend. The tournament will be held at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center March 9 and 10. Each wrestler will compete in a 24-man bracket. The Middle School South wrestlers who will compete are: Five wrestlers from Middle School North also will compete in the tournament. The wrestlers' progress can be followed on the IESA website. High school wrestlers from around Illinois competed in the state individual wrestling tournament this weekend, including two boys from Lake Zurich High School. Senior Scott Hoff was the best Bear of the tournament as he grabbed sixth place at 160, while sophomore Sean Lynch has two more seasons to build off this year’s experience. Hoff dropped his first match, 8-0, to Farai Sewera of Lake Park, putting him on a four-match road to the fifth place bout. He stopped Justin Valencia of Granite City, 3-2, in the preliminary consolation round and then defeated Tom Mitrenga of Naperville Central, 8-7 to move into the wrestleback semifinals.
