Spencer Loomis Elementary students are participating in “Dollar Denim Days,” a week-long, school-based initiative orchestrated by Two Hearts Rock to raise awareness for rare disease. The campaign unifies the student body under a symbol of hope - the Blue Denim Genes Ribbon. As a statement of solidarity, students and faculty members wear jeans to school. Wearing denim in harmony brings awareness to a critical medical cause. Rare disease affects 1 in 10 Americans, and 350 million people worldwide. Two Lake Zurich moms have combined their shared love of music with their desire to help children fighting rare diseases. Lori Butler and Kerry Hughes of Two Hearts Rock started a non-profit that raises awareness of rare diseases, supports the families affected by rare disease and raises funds for research. “Two Hearts Rock is a platform for raising hope and awareness for rare disease using live music,” Butler said. “The name comes from a Bruce Springsteen song; Two hearts are better than one and two hearts will get the job done,’ Hughes said. When Amelia "Emmy" Foster arrived at Spencer Loomis Elementary School on Monday, it didn't take long for her to steal the hearts of everyone around her. As soon as her mom, Colleen, let Emmy out of her stroller, the 3-year-old rushed toward the dozens of students gathered in the multipurpose room. But as eager as Emmy was to see them, the students were even happier to meet Emmy. The Spencer Loomis students recently completed a fundraiser, Jeans for Genes, with the local Two Hearts Rock nonprofit group. The money raised will help support Rett syndrome research. Lake Zurich-based nonprofit Two Hearts Rock is working in concert with the Spencer Loomis Elementary School Student Council to bring awareness to Rett syndrome, a rare and debilitating genetic disease for which there is no cure. All proceeds from the Dollar Denim Days fundraiser will go toward advancing research of the disease, which robs young children diagnosed with it of both their verbal and motor skills. The impetus for the fundraiser comes from the plight of 3-year-old Amelia "Emmy" Foster and her family. Emmy was diagnosed with Rett syndrome in the summer of 2011.
