Fox Weatherman to Visit St. Francis de Sales

First-graders will get a lesson on meteorology from Bill Bellis.

Bill Bellis, FOX Chicago News Chief Meteorologist, will visit St. Francis de Sales Parish School, 11 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich, on Tuesday, March 12 at 1 p.m. As part of their science lesson on weather, St. Francis de Sales first-graders will receive a firsthand account from Bellis about his experience as a meteorologist. Bellis comes to FOX Chicago from KNXV-TV in Phoenix, where he served as chief meteorologist for eight years. A three-time Emmy Award winner, Bellis holds a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science from the University of Arizona with minors in math, physics and hydrology. St. Francis Parish Supports LZHS Choir's Trip to the Vatican

St. Francis de Sales Parish donates money to fund Lake Zurich High School Choir's trip to Rome, where they will sing at St. Peter's Basilica.

  Fr. David F. Ryan, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish, visited the Lake Zurich High School (LZHS) Choir, recently, to hand deliver a donation of $23,480.25. The money will help fund the Choir’s upcoming trip to Rome, Italy, where they will perform in St. Peter’s Basilica at The Vatican.  The funds were raised by St. Francis de Sales parishioners the weekend of Dec.15-16, when approximately 100 members of the LZHS Choir performed Christmas songs and worship songs at five Masses throughout the weekend. In an effort to support the community’s youth, the parish took up a second collection for the LZHS Choir’s trip to Rome. During his recent visit to the high school, Fr. Obituary: Services Planned for Rosalia Fraterrigo

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 6 and the funeral Friday, December 7.

Visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday in Palatine and Friday in Lake Zurich for Rosalia Fraterrigo (nee Sciortino).  Rosalia was born September 21, 1935 in Italy and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 3. She was a resident of Lake Zurich.  She was the beloved wife of Luciano, loving mother of Lou (Colette), Marisa (Steve), Padrta and Sergio (Jacqueline), cherished Nonna to Sara, Mikayla, Sarah, Julia, Daniel, Kross, Aaron, Mia and Sophia.  Visitation will be held Thursday, December 6 at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Prayers will begin Friday, December 7 at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home and then will proceed to St. Francis de Sales Church, …

Bishop Rassas to Talk About HHS Mandate in Lake Zurich

Bishop George Rassas will visit St. Francis de Sales. Aug. 22, to discuss why the Catholic Church is opposed to the HHS mandate.

Bishop George Rassas will speak on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 33 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich. Bishop George Rassas will provide information on the current debate on religious freedom between the Catholic Church and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Time will include Q & A. All are invited to attend. The controversial HHS mandate was issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Affordable Care Act and requires all employer health plans to provide coverage for contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs, regardless of any moral or religious objections. Jeepers Sneakers Event Donates New Nikes to School Kids

Hawthorn Woods Women's Club, Lake Zurich Emmaus House and local shoe store unite for charitable event.

The Hawthorn Woods Women's Club, a local shoe store and Emmaus House of Hospitality made possible another successful Jeepers Sneakers event. One hundred and three pairs of brand-new Nikes were distributed to local school children on Sunday, Aug. 12—just in time for back-to-school.    Jeepers Sneakers was coordinated by Laura Zickuhr, Jeeper Sneaker Program Director, and shoe store manager Lavinia Munoz. The Hawthorn Woods Womens Club generously donated the funds for Nike gym shoes and a package of socks for each child.  Ms. Munoz worked with volunteers from her store to size each child’s foot. Jubilee Garden Expects Record Bounty for Food Pantries

Lake Zurich-Kildeer community garden needs volunteers for harvesting.

    St. Francis de Sales' Jubilee Garden is expected to harvest about 5,000 lbs. of produce this year, an equivalent of about $15,000 worth of fresh, organic vegetables, according to Kathy Gill, garden leader. Vegetables and fruit grown at Jubilee Garden on Rte. 22, east of Quentin Road,  are donated to local food pantries. “This is the most nutritious food the people are going to get. It's very healthy. Most food at the food pantry is processed,” Gill said. Gill has been the manager of the garden for the last three years; she previously worked in information technology (IT). “It’s wonderful God has given me this opportunity. Emmaus House Accepting Donations for Annual Rummage Sale

Have some nice items you've grown tired of? Donate them to this Lake Zurich charity this week.

  Emmaus House of Hospitality will hold its annual Rummage Sale on June 14 and 15. Emmaus House is currently accepting donations.  Donations are accepted Sunday, June 10, through Thursday June 14. Drop offs anytime Sunday through Wednesday, but on Thursday until noon only. Curb service on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Emmaus House is a Lake Zurich charity in existence since 2001. The charity serves dinners to the poor every Sunday at St. Francis de Sales Church. Close to 200 people attend. Emmaus House also distributes donated food after the dinner. The charity exists because of generous donations from the community and the funds raised at the annual Rummage Sales. St. Francis Parishioners Collect $26,000 for Harrisburg

The church also is holding a drive to collect canned goods and bottled water for the tornado-ravaged town.

St. Francis de Sales parishioners collected $26,000 for the town of Harrisburg, Ill., which was hit by an EF4 tornado Feb. 29. The parish also is collecting canned food and bottled water for the town. St. Francis de Sales held a special collection the weekend of March 10 and 11, with parishioners ultimately donating $26,000. The Rev. David Ryan, the church’s pastor, left for Harrisburg on March 21 to deliver the funds to St. Mary's Parish in Harrisburg, along with St. Joseph's Parish in Ridgway. "People were really very generous," said Diana MacGillis, spokeswoman for St. Francis de Sales parish. Local Teens Donate Teddy Bears to Fire Department

The project was coordinated by St. Francis de Sales Parish confirmation students.

Teenagers from St. Francis de Sales Church delivered dozens of teddy bears to the Lake Zurich Fire Department on Monday morning. Under the leadership of Aleyce Baca, Michelle Sterbenz and Nancy Elmore, the teens raised $600 to buy the teddy bears, which will be given to children during crises like fires or accidents.  Baca said for their confirmation project, 30 teens baked cookies, wrapped them and then held a bake sale at their church.  On Monday, many of the teenagers — all students at Lake Zurich and Carmel High schools — delivered the teddy bears to Lake Zurich Fire Station No. 1.  Those teens included: All of the teens are 10th-graders except for Davey Hass, who is in 11th grade.

LZHS Senior Wants You To Help The Jubilee Garden Grow

Miranda Flores has organized a "Fields of Faith Family Day" to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award by garnering volunteers to help feed the needy.

Lake Zurich High School senior Miranda Flores is working to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, and has chosen a project to achieve it that benefits those less fortunate in the community.    St. Francis De Sales’ Jubilee Garden at Route 22 east of Quentin Road, has been growing produce locally for more than 10 years.  Over the last two years, the organically-grown fruits and vegetables have primarily benefited the Emmaus House of Hospitality and St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. To earn her Gold Award, Flores created the idea behind the "Fields of Faith Family Day," which is designed to garner more volunteers to assist with the corn crop in the Jubilee Garden.   “The crop needs many hands to be weeded in order for it to prosperous,” said Kathy …
