Lake Zurich D95 Announces Filing Period for School Board Candidates

Filing begins Dec. 17.

  Nominating petition forms for the April 9, 2013 school board election in Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 are now available. Forms may be picked up in the office of the board secretary at 400 S. Old Rand Rd., Lake Zurich, on any business day between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A school board candidate’s petition must be filed in the same office no earlier than 8 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17 and no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 26. Candidates’ names will appear on the election ballot in the order in which their nominating papers are received in the secretary’s office. Early Voting Begins Monday Morning for April Consolidated Election

Polls open from March 14 through March 31 for early voters.

Early voting for the Tuesday, April 5, Consolidated Election begins Monday, March 14, according to Willard Helander,  Lake County  clerk. Early voting is available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, through Thursday, March 31. Voters can visit LakeVoterPower.info and enter information to confirm their registration at their current address, see a sample ballot and find their early voting location. "Early voting continues to be a popular choice for Lake County voters. Because April 5 may be busy, select the day and time most convenient for you to vote early," said Helander. Candidates Provide Their Views on School Issues

Four candidates running to fill three open postions on the school board.

Jim Burke, Doug Goldberg, Tony Pietro and Chris Wallace, the four candidates who are running, had an opportunity to discuss their views on a number of school-related topics during the school board candidate forum The forum was held Thursday night at Middle School North. There are three open seats on the board up for election on Tuesday, April 5. A second forum, sponsored by the Community Unit School District 95 PTOs, will be held 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, in the Middle School South Cafeteria. Second of two District 95 PTO-sponsored forums is at Middle School South.

The second of two school board candidate forums sponsored by the Community Unit School District 95 PTOs will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, in the Middle School South Cafeteria. The first forum was held on March 2, at Middle School North. Three incumbents Jim Burke, Doug Goldberg, and Tony Pietro and a fourth candidate, Chris Wallace, are on the ballot and are expected to attend the forums. There are three posts on the board up for election. School Is Not Out for Summer

District 95 expands enrichment summer school classes and adds more credit advancement options for high school students.

Different options offered to District 95 students for summer school classes and the continuation of the Extended School Year (ESY) services for students with disabilities were discussed at the Feb. 24, Community Unit School District 95 board meeting. District 95 students don’t have to take the summer off of school if they don’t want to. New credit advancement classes, enrichment courses, and summer school co-operatives with Wauconda and Mundelein high schools are available. For the second year in a row, Lake Zurich High School (LZHS) is offering a wider range of credit advancement classes instead of credit recovery classes. School Board Approves Out-of-District Tuition Increase

An out-of-district tuition increase, high school attendance rate and a donation of formal gowns were reported at Thursday night's Community Unit School District 95 Board of Education meeting. District 95 Out-of-District Tuition Increase A $766.50 out-of-district tuition rate per student was approved by the board. The total cost for an out of district student to attend any school in District 95 is now going to be $11,178. “We increase the tuition every year, “said Jeff King, assistant superintendent of business and operations, District 95. District 95 Passes on $75,525 and Moves Forward to Sell Charles Quentin Elementary School

School Board waives impact fee senior housing developer, puts vacant school up for sale.

The developer of Zurich Meadows, 250 Mohawk Trail, won't have to pay a $75,525 impact fee because the Community Unit School District 95 board waived the fee at its Dec. 16 meeting. The board also put the vacant Charles Quentin Elementary School, 21250 West Sherley Rd., up for sale. Carefree Development, LLC asked District 95 to waive the impact fee because, "We would not be having an impact on the school district," said Phil Moeller, owner. Zurich Meadows is planned to house resident's ages 55 years and older only. Per the agreement Carefree Development, LLC submitted to District 95, if at any time a school age child begins to reside at Zurich Meadows, they would pay the impact fee to District 95. District 95’s Budget is Balanced But Tight

Hard economic times have yet to hit District 95's budget.

Just like a household budget, District 95 is balancing their budget by taking small amounts of money from several different places instead of just one. "We have looked at cutting expenses everywhere and not just one place," said Mike Egan, Ph.D., superintendent, District 95. "For example, we've cut $10,000 in paper costs by communicating electronically district wide." With a small amount of wiggle room District 95's Board of Education approved the 2010-2011 budget of $94,782,832 at tonight's school board meeting with board members asking for room to breath.
