Meet Max the Recycling Dog

This pooch really knows how to fetch!

Meet Max A. Pooch, the "recycled" Labrador retriever who loves to help his owner Keith Sanderson recycle. Max even has his own Facebook page and website with tips on protecting the environment. Max, of Deerfield, was originally adopted about seven years ago from Orphans of the Storm, an animal shelter in Riverwoods. Tired of the basic game of fetch, Sanderson determined that Max was smart and energetic enough to learn some a valuable new trick—recycling. Soon, Max was fetching items like plastic water bottles and aluminum cans on their daily walks, reported Patch in 2011. With Earth Day coming up on April 22, Max is eager to spread the word about keeping the planet green and the environment clean, reported the Deerfield Review. His owner …

Gather up all the "retired" electronics from around your home and office and bring them to the Barrington Community Expo this Saturday, March 9 between 10 a.m. and noon, when Vintage Tech Recyclers will be accepting used electronics. Drop-off is free and open to the public at the Expo site, Langendorf Park Firtness and Recreation Center, 235 Lions Dr. in Barrington. Accepted items:  Recycling raw materials from end-of-life electronics is the most effective solution to the rapid and ever-growing e-waste problem. Most electronic devices contain a variety of materials that can be recovered for future uses. Food is Biggest Waste Headed for Landfills

More than 33 million tons of food is wasted each year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“Think before you throw” has been the mantra of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) since becoming an intergovernmental Agency in 1988.  As a new year begins, SWANCC encourages residents to be more aware of what they buy and throw away, and that there are many ways to recover materials rather than sending them to landfill. Food scrap waste heads up the list. In November 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that food is now the single largest type of waste going to America’s municipal landfills and incinerators. To provide guidance for residents interested in composting, SWANCC developed a 7-minute video called Composting At Home. To learn more about backyard composting, tips for success and a…

SWALCO Asks Residents to Recycle First, Trash Last

New Lake County campaign puts focus on recycling.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) wants residents to place the priority on recycling first, defining what’s left as trash. Recognizing that a lot of items are recyclable via curbside recycling in the County, SWALCO is launching a new campaign, called, “Recycle First. Trash Last” to encourage residents to shift how they think about recycling.   “By transitioning the mindset of residents from one of pulling recyclables out of the trash to, ideally, pulling trash out of the recycling, recycling can become a proactive everyday habit,” said Walter Willis, executive director of SWALCO. “The ‘Recycle First. Trash Last.’ theme embodies the perspective we want Lake County residents to adopt: to view recyclable materials as the …

Finally, Finally!!! We are in desperate need of recycling education, but I am concerned their slogan contradicts another slogan I have heard, which is "when in doubt throw it out" This slogan was designed to insure that those items which were NOT recyclable were NOT getting into the system to prevent the contamination and destruction to recycling equipment. For example, I heard quotes regarding …   more ›

Freecyclers Give as Good as They Get

Lake Zurich branch of national movement keeps goods circulating in neighborhoods and out of landfills.

Got a piece of furniture that just doesn't fit in with your new decorating scheme?  Or maybe your closet features a pair of pants two sizes too big, thanks to a successful weight loss plan. Perhaps you're just itching to get your hands on some fluffy patio chair cushions or a used laptop, but can't fit the expense into your budget. Freecycle, an online listserv, brings people who want to dispense with unwanted stuff together with people looking for those cast-offs. The Lake Zurich chapter of the national group is an online community that regularly gives and gets free items from each other, said moderator Vickie Cheek. "It works very well, especially now when times are so hard," said Cheek, adding that the Lake Zurich group, established in …

I belong to Lake Zurich Freecycle, and I love it. I've never asked for anything, but I have been able to give away a number of items to people who've posted they were looking for something. It's allowed me to give away some of my kids outgrown items, and a bench router. I would encourage anyone to join this group.   more ›
