Lake Zurich Flames Football Teams Advance in Playoffs

Six teams will compete in the second round of playoffs this weekend.

Lake Zurich Flames youth football is helping to cultivate a tradition of winning in Lake Zurich. The Flames have teams from each of the five age/weight groups that have advanced to round 2 of a 3 round playoff format. "It is great to be a part of the football powerhouse that Lake Zurich has become in the state of IL," said Flames board member Keith Mescha. "As we prepare for the playoffs, due to our close ties with the high school football program, we have had some of the varsity players stop by and help motivate the boys with a few words of encouragement at practice. The close knit community we have here in Lake Zurich is such a fun thing to experience." Teams that will compete on Sunday include Lightweight Pac 10, Bantam Pac 10, Feather …

O'Brien Family Feuds Over Bears-Packers Game

Husband and wife and their two sons take opposite sides for the Super Bowl of the NFC rivals.

Sunday will be an uncomfortable and tense afternoon at the Lake Zurich home of the O’Brien family.  You see, the O’Briens have a “mixed marriage.” Bill is a Packers fan and his wife Lynn is a Bears fan. And it gets worse. Their sons, Garrett, 14, is a Bears fan and William, 15, is a Packers fan. “The first argument we ever got into was over a Bears-Packers game,” said Lynn. In case you haven’t noticed, the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers will play in a monumental matchup on Sunday with the winner of the game headed to the Super Bowl and the loser heading home empty handed. It’s the oldest rivalry in the NFL and while the Bears and Packers play each other twice every year, this is the first time since 1941 that they will meet a third …

Storefronts Bare Signs of Success

Lake Zurich High School students decorate downtown with messages of blue and white bliss.

Lake Zurich High School students adorned storefront windows from end of downtown to the other with Bears country pride for motivation in this weekend's 7A playoff game against Wheaton-Warrenville South at 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, in Champaign. Handmade blue and white ribbons with the simple slogan, "Go Bears" are tied around tree branches, benches and light posts in downtown Lake Zurich. Even Village Hall has its windows painted and a banner of support over the doorway. Some businesses outside of downtown, like Sonic Drive-In, got into the act with their own signs of support.

Great article and pictures but the individuals who decorated downtown and made the home made ribbons were the mothers (MaMa Bears) of the football teams players. Especially a select few who were supported by the Lake Zurich Quarterback club. There was a committe formed for decorating the downtown.   more ›

Bears Will Have to Contain Knight's Potent Offense

Lake Zurich's Defense Will Have Their Hands Full Against Prospect.

The Lake Zurich Bears and the Prospect Knights definitely have one thing in common concerning their respective first-round playoff games last week: both started with an opening kickoff return for a touchdown.   In the Bear's case, Jacob Brinlee ran the ball back 77 yards for a 7-0 lead four seconds in to the first quarter. The Knights were on the defensive end of things in their game, as the Guilford (Rockford) Vikings' junior Dontrel Chance returned the opening kick 85 yards.   The similarities end there, however, as the Knights went on to score seven unanswered touchdowns after that initial score, rolling to a 54-14 victory over Guilford, while the Bears were unrelenting in their 41-7 saunter over Jacobs.  Prospect finished the season 9-…

Brinlee Leads the Way to Bears First Playoff Victory

New career rushing mark established during 41-7 victory over the Jacobs Eagles.

On a sunny late October afternoon at Mel Eide Field, the host Lake Zurich Bears didn't disappoint their fans as they cruised to an easy victory over the Jacobs Golden Eagles. Jacob Brinlee ran back the opening kickoff for a 77-yard  touchdown run, giving the Bears a 7-0 lead four seconds into the first quarter. On Lake Zurich's next possession, quarterback Zach Till ran for a 49-yard gain to the 4-yard line. Till then ran for a 4-yard touchdown to give the Bears a 14-0 lead with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears' front line repeatedly stopped the Golden Eagles' offense from any significant gains. Linebacker J.J. Raffelson sacked Jacobs quarterback Jason Judson with 6:33 left in the first quarter. Cas Zyks had the Golden Eagles…
