The Red Rose Children's Choir of Lake County is one of several choirs that will participate in a special concert to remember the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. The choir will participate in the Healing the Brokenhearted concert at 5 p.m. Jan. 13 at St. James Cathedral, 5 E. Huron St., Chicago. The concert will be recorded and then broadcast at 7 p.m. on 98.7 WFMT, Chicago's classical radio station, and on WFMT's website. Lake Zurich neighbors came together to light luminaries, on Friday night, the one-week anniversary of the Sandy Hill Elementary School tragedy. The Light the Night for Newtown was encouraged by Village President Suzanne Branding as a way to show the community of Newtown that people across the country care about them. One neighborhood that had numerous luminaries was Red Bridge subdivision of Lake Zurich. Red Bridge resident Shelly Carlson was the force behind the Light the Night for Newtown event. A Barrington High School student is going above and beyond to help the community of Newtown, Conn. heal from the tragic school shooting that happened last week. Lydia Gabriel, a freshman at BHS just knew she wanted to do something to help when she heard about the 27 people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. “I always loved elementary school and when I heard about the people in Connecticut; I was just so upset and heartbroken,” she said. Gabriel, a member of the Barrington High School choir, was singing Christmas songs when something clicked. “I said, maybe I could make a CD of traditional Christmas songs and give a CD to them, and donate money I raise to Connecticut,” she said. The Newtown school shooting has spurred some retailers to suspend gun sales.
Christmas shopping for the outdoorsman may be a little different this year. Walmart pulled from its shelves a Bushmaster rifle that's in the same group of guns as the one reportedly used by the gunman in the Dec. 14 shootings at in Newtown, Conn., according to media reports. There are Walmart stores in many local communities, including Lake Zurich, Palatine, Vernon Hills and Wheeling. It’s unclear if the chain suspended sales of any other sporting rifles. Searches for “modern sporting rifle,” "semi-automatic rifle” and “bushmaster” displayed guns for sale in stores only. But when checked for availability, all showed as "out of stock." Village encourages residents to light luminaria Friday on one week anniversary of tragedy In Connecticut.
Village President Suzanne Branding encouraged Lake Zurich residents to light luminaria, Friday night, in support of the families and community of Newtown, CT, where 20 children and six adults died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Dec. 14. The effort was inspired by a luminaria lighting in Grayslake and fueled by Lake Zurich Patch Facebook fans, including Shelly Carlson, who responded to a link to the Grayslake story. Trustee Jonathon Sprawka saw the Facebook posts and suggested the village hold a luminaria night for Newtown as well. After the tragic mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn., there are ways you can help.
The horrific school shooting Friday at Sandy Hook School that left 26 dead, including 20 young children, has stirred the hearts of people across the country and around the world who want to know how they can help. The Newtown Patch reported that people from Connecticut, California, Canada and even Australia and India have sent an outpouring of support. People in Illinois also want to know how they can help.
