Lake Zurich Area is Magnet for Grocery Stores

Area residents have plenty of choices when shopping for groceries and more to come.

The Lake Zurich area, particularly the Rte. 12 corridor seems to be somewhat of a mecca for grocery stores. Between Lake Zurich and Kildeer, the area currently has five stand-alone grocers—Fresh Market, Jewel-Osco, Dominick’s Finer Foods, Aldi's, and Trader Joes. There are two more on the way—Whole Foods and Mariano’s Fresh Market—as well as talk of a third--Woodmans.  That’s not even counting retailers that offer large grocery sections, like Walmart, Target and Costco. Lake Zurich also has Ania's Polish Deli which is much more than a deli, actually a specialty European market.  That totals to about a dozen different places to buy groceries in the Lake Zurich-Kildeer area.  “Everybody has to eat,” said Michael Talbett, Kildeer village …

I think Fresh Market will be the first casualty once Whole Foods relocates and the Mariano's opens. All three going after the same type of shopper demographic - something has to give.   more ›

Lake Zurich Trustees Approve Economic Incentives for Mariano's

Sales tax rebate to fund public improvements at site.

The Lake Zurich village board approved a sales tax rebate for $1.55 million to the developers of Bradford Town Crossing at a special meeting, Monday. Bradford Town Crossing, at Quentin Road and Route 22, will be home to Mariano's Fresh Market, McDonald’s and other businesses. The developers asked for the rebate to fund off-site public improvements including extension and installation of public works and sanitary sewer to the site, access from Quentin Road and a left-turn lane off Route 22. Trustees voted unanimously to approve the economic incentives, however there was some debate over the impact of the tax incentives. Trustee Jeff Halen wondered how much additional revenue Mariano’s would garner. “For the good or the bad Lake Zurich has …

Roundy's CEO Bob Mariano Speaks at Business Event

Mariano and American Chartered Bank President Dan Miller spoke of the importance of employees in growing a business.

When it comes to the supermarkets that make up the Roundy's family, including Mariano's, the strength of the company lies in its people, says Bob Mariano, chairman and chief executive officer of Roundy's. "We have to teach and have a shared vision … so they do things because they want to, not because they're told what to do," Mariano told a sizable group of people who attended a recent GLMV (Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills) Chamber of Commerce business mixer. From going the extra mile for a customer to greeting people in a genuine way, "they have to want to do it," Mariano added. He shared the story of a young man who works at Mariano's in Palatine. While gathering carts, the young man greets customers as they get out of …

Mariano's does NOT value its employees. They test them with contempt, disrespect and intimidation. Bob Mariano isa LIAR. That story is false. He is no better than Walmart, all employees are part time, are told to do so much work they cannot complete then are disciplined because work not done, benefits are ONLY provided by union, and union is corrupt and bought and paid for by Bob Mariano to do …   more ›

Village Board Gives Mariano’s Development Green Light

Developer will now go before the plan commission to request approval for planned unit development to include grocer, along with a possible bank, drive-through restaurant and smaller retailers.

Mariano’s Fresh Market is one step closer to becoming a reality in Lake Zurich. During a courtesy review Monday, trustees gave their blessing for the project to move forward to the plan commission. Bradford Real Estate Companies, the developer overseeing the proposed planned unit development, wants the property at the northwest corner of Route 22 and Quentin Road to be rezoned to a B-3 regional shopping district. The planned unit development potentially would include a 73,000-square-foot Mariano’s on the northwest portion of the development area, facing Route 22. Two proposed outlots would be along Route 22 as freestanding businesses, while a third building on the northeast corner adjacent to Quentin Road could house multiple tenants. “…
