Students Learn Valuable Lessons Through Rotary Program

Lake Zurich High School students recently shared their experiences at a Rotary Club leadership weekend.

“People say that certain experiences changed their lives.  The RYLA leadership weekend changed my outlook on life. I’ll never look at things the same way again,” declared Ben Papke, a Lake Zurich High School senior, at the Lake Zurich Rotary Club's May 13 meeting. Papke was talking about his experience one of ten students selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program this spring. Students spent four days and three nights listening to speakers, sharing experiences, taking Outward Bound training and participating in “experiments” designed to identify their leadership styles and help them develop leadership skills. “The best thing about it is that everyone treats everyone else like an adult,” said Kayla Cluff…

Life Coach Says Put “Self-Care” First in Relationships

Certified Professional Co-Active Coach speaks at Rotary Club of Lake Zurich luncheon.

For a great relationship, the first thing you have to think about is self-care, according to Laura Menze, life/success coach and owner of LifeQuest Alliance, Libertyville. Menze spoke on “Creating Remarkable Relationships” at Friday’s Rotary Club of Lake Zurich meeting. “It’s not about selfishness, it’s about self-care,” explained Menze, a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC). “They are not the same thing.” Selfishness is with intent or disregard for someone else, she continued.  Self-care means taking care of yourself first. “It may sound kind of crazy, but if you don’t fill up your own tank first, you won’t have anything left to give anybody,” said Menze. People have a tendency to help others first while putting their own needs …

Signing up helps first responders find individuals quicker and know more about their health conditions in case of an emergency.

If you or someone you know has a health condition or disability, it would be wise to look into signing up for the Illinois Premise Alert Program (PAP), according to the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.  By doing so, individuals with special needs can benefit from first responders being aware of their health issues prior to arriving on the scene.  People will also be able to be located more rapidly if an emergency occurs. The program is two-tiered; registration enables vital health information to be loaded confidentially into a database and shared between police, fire and ambulance personnel. Individuals can also receive a flashing Emergency Home Beacon Bulb to be installed in an outside light fixture, which helps emergency responders …

Rotary Club Grime Busters Clean Up The Streets

Ela Road from Route 22 to Cuba Road gets spruced up for 15th year.

The Lake Zurich Rotary Club was out in force for their bi-annual road clean-up.  About a dozen Rotary members gathered  during the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 15, to pick up trash along Ela Road from Route 22 to Cuba Road as part of their Adopt A Highway Program. The effort has been a tradition for the last 15 years, and normally occurs in April and October or when the weather permits. Two Lake Zurich High School students who head the Interact Club, a subsidiary of the Rotary Club, also pitched in to clean up the roadside. The focus of Interact mirrors the mission of the Rotary; to provide humanitarian service and bring goodwill to people through philanthropic volunteerism. "Being a part of Interact has been a great experience; getting …
