Lake Zurich Fire/Rescue reports minimal damage.
Lake Zurich Fire/Rescue Department is reporting minimal damage from a fire at Sonic Drive In, 205 S. Rand Rd., tonight. The fire was noticed by the Lake Zurich Fire Department Deputy Chief Don Golubski who saw a fire on the exterior roofline of the building as he passed it on his way home from work, according to the news release. Lake Zurich Fire/Rescue responded to the the report at 5:35 p.m. Deputy Chief Golubski reported the fire and evacuated the Sonic employees. The first engine on the scene extinguished the fire within minutes of arrival. Firefighters contained the fire to the exterior of the building with minimal damage to the façade and canopy. A preliminary plan to close two fire stations and build a new site is being considered.
Lake Zurich’s Fire/Rescue Chief David Wheelock is proposing a plan to consolidate four fire stations into three and build a new site that may also serve as a new home for village hall. “This is very conceptual and very preliminary right now, but we’ve reached a point in the discussions where we need to get everyone on board before going further,” Wheelock said. A Community of the Whole meeting was held, last night, with the village board to give Wheelock an opportunity to present the proposal. Village President Suzanne Branding said the consensus among village board members was to direct the fire department to explore the opportunity. Firefighters, Home Depot and neighbors replace rotting deck for Lake Zurich family.
Julie Parchment often noticed her neighbors Kelly and Larry Brodeur struggling to help their 10-year-old child Harrison, who has autism. “I always wanted to help them, but wasn’t sure how. I noticed their deck was crumbling and Harrison loves to be outside. We thought maybe the neighborhood could get together and help rebuild their crumbling deck,” Parchment said. Lake Zurich Home Depot helped realize the project with a $6,700 donation of materials, coordinated by Home Depot employee Michelle Lukowski. Kelly got news that her neighbors were planning this project last spring and it couldn’t have come at a better time, she said. “It was Good Friday. LZACC after hours event will be held at Fire Station #1 on Thursday.
Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce members and prospective members will be the judges at the annual Firefighters Chili Cookoff, this Thursday. Fire Marshal and cookoff organizer Guy Trayling said excitement is growing for the event and firefighters’ competitive spirit is rising as they vie for the golden spoon award. Trayling said he expects about 10 competitors. The Chili Cook Off is sponsored by Whole Foods in Palatine and Lake Zurich Travel. The event will be held at Fire House #1, 321 Buesching Road, from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25.
