Village officials are seeking an updated water and sewer rate study before making a decision.
Lake Zurich's water and sewer rates could be on the rise as soon as late September. Trustees held a special meeting Monday night to discuss with village staff a consultant's recommendation that the board raise water and sewer rates. Village officials hired engineering consultants Baxter and Woodman of Illinois to audit the water and sewer fund. The firm presented its findings to the village board Aug. 1. At the Aug. 1 meeting, a Baxter and Woodman representative said the water and sewer fund has a cash balance of $1.9 million, and that amount continues to fall. She recommended that the village save about $2 million annually for the water and sewer fund to cover future expenditures. "I guess our biggest concern is getting to a juncture …

Lake Zurich has been involved in an annexation dispute with Hawthorn Woods for more than a year.
A legal fight over a boundary agreement between Lake Zurich and Hawthorn Woods has been brewing for more than a year over properties at Route 22 and Quentin Road. A border clash between the villages of Lake Zurich and Hawthorn Woods centers around the Cedar Hill Nursery property at the northwest corner of Route 22 and Quentin Road. The property in question has been owned by Charlene Wooten and her son Dennis since 1984. They run Cedar Hill Nursery. The dispute has been playing out in the Lake County courts for the last couple of months and relates to a 13-year-old boundary agreement between the two municipalities. In June, Lake County Judge Mitchell Hoffman issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting Hawthorn Woods and Lake Zurich…

After 39 years as a math teacher at Lake Zurich High School, Steve Ellis plans on putting away his calculator next year.
Next year, Lake Zurich High School math teacher Steve Ellis will come full circle with his teaching career, retiring after 39 years from the same place he began his career. “A friend from college was teaching at Lake Zurich High School and that’s how I got my foot into the door,” said Ellis. Since then, he has taught every math class LZHS has offered. For the last 24 years, he has taken on teaching Advanced Placement calculus classes and, according to Math Department Chairman Jeff Biven, “prepared and guided over 800 students for one of the advanced placement calculus exams.” Ellis has a 90% success rate in his students achieving a score of three or more. According to The College Board, which administers the Advanced Placement exams, a …
Trustees voted unanimously Monday night against approving the "memorandum of understanding" that would have required the village to invest $50,000 toward the plan to bring Lake Michigan water to a group of consortium communities.
Lake Zurich trustees voted unanimously Monday night against approving a measure that would require the village to provide $50,000 to the North-West Lake County Lake Michigan Water Planning Group, an amount that would establish a governing agency, determine the costs to bring Lake Michigan water to the consortium communities and provide for a public education program. Instead, the board agreed to give Public Works Director David Heyden the authority to report back to the group and inquire whether Lake Zurich can be solely involved with the public education portion of the pact. The "memorandum of understanding" considered at Monday night's meeting would serve as the next step toward the plan to bring Lake Michigan water to several …

What was the answer to this week's "Bringing Back the Past" question? Did you guess correctly?
If you guessed that the Zurich Lodge No. 1089 building is at Beauteau and Oak Streets, you guessed correctly. After 10 years of meeting in the old village hall building, the Zurich Lodge started renting an old Baptist church at Beauteau and Oak Streets for its new home. The Zurich Lodge purchased the building in 1941. Stay tuned for next week's "Bringing Back the Past" feature and question, which will be revealed on May 21. The information for this week's "Bringing Back the Past" was provided by Ron Frank, vice president of the Ela Historical Society. The Historical Society, located at 95 E. Main St., is open on Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Zurich Lodge No. 1089 bought its permanent building in 1941.
This week's selection in our "Bringing Back the Past" series is the Lake Zurich Masonic Temple. Zurich Lodge No. 1089 bought the building in 1941, but prior to that, it had sat vacant for about 12 years, said Ron Frank, vice president of the Ela Historical Society. The building initially served as a Baptist church. "So we really don't know how old it is exactly," said Frank. According to a pamphlet put together for the Zurich Lodge's 50th anniversary in 1972, the Lake Zurich Masonic Club was formed in spring 1922. "It was an organization for Masonic instruction," the pamphlet states. "They held several meetings and worked diligently to find a meeting place, furniture … and also to get a sufficient number of members to start the Lodge. The …
Penny Welch from Long Grove will appraise visitors' antiques from 2-4 p.m. Sunday.
Coral Lee Scranton knows exactly what she'll be bringing to the Ela Historical Society's first annual antique appraisal event. She hopes to learn the value of an old beaded, satin cape she found in her aunt's hope chest. She's also bringing along her great-great-granmother's pin and earrings. "It's our own 'Roadshow,'" said Scranton, the director of the Ela Historical Society, likening the event to the popular "Antiques Roadshow" TV program. The antique appraisal event will feature certified appraiser Penny Welch from The Emporium in Long Grove. Scranton said people can bring in their antique treasure or collection, excluding art and furniture, for Welch to examine. "It's just to get more people involved so they know what we're about," …

District 95 is in the process of hiring a Student Assistance Program coordinator to implement drug education in the middle schools and high school.
Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 is in the process of hiring a Student Assistance Program coordinator to implement a drug education program, but the decision to start a mandatory drug testing program has not yet been made. The hiring of the Student Assistance Program, or SAP, coordinator, along with comments from a parent, precipitated a discussion about the mandatory drug testing issue at the District 95 Board's Committee of the Whole meeting May 12. In November, Lake Zurich High School Principal Kim Kolze and Social Worker Barbara Belke presented the idea of hiring the SAP coordinator as part of the mandatory drug testing program.
