Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try …

Firefighters, Home Depot and neighbors replace rotting deck for Lake Zurich family.
Julie Parchment often noticed her neighbors Kelly and Larry Brodeur struggling to help their 10-year-old child Harrison, who has autism. “I always wanted to help them, but wasn’t sure how. I noticed their deck was crumbling and Harrison loves to be outside. We thought maybe the neighborhood could get together and help rebuild their crumbling deck,” Parchment said. Lake Zurich Home Depot helped realize the project with a $6,700 donation of materials, coordinated by Home Depot employee Michelle Lukowski. Kelly got news that her neighbors were planning this project last spring and it couldn’t have come at a better time, she said. “It was Good Friday. My husband was at the park with Harrison and I was home and all these ants were in the …

The Lake Zurich Community, showing its generosity and compassion, comes together to help a family in need; more donations needed.
Kelly and Larry Brodeur, 40 Red Haw, have been Lake Zurich residents for 15 years. The Brodeur Family -- Kelly, Larry, Brianna (Middle School South), and Harrison (age 10) have an unsafe deck that is attached to their second story. It is important that the Brodeur family have a safe environment for their son Harrison, as he is autistic and has seizure conditions. Harrison loves the outdoors, but he needs supervision 24 hours a day. A generous grant from Home Depot allowed the Lake Zurich neighbors, some Lake Zurich firefighters, Peace Lutheran Church, and other community members to come together to help this family. Home Depot will be supplying the materials, and some of the LZ firefighters have volunteered to create the deck plans …

Dear Patch and sponsor Home Depot; This week, I have received numerous "Memorial Day Sale" promotions by post and email from vendors who should know better than dishonor a day of reverence with advertising. I know that it is now common to commercialize national holidays celebrating faith or honoring military service, but I ask that you not use Memorial Day for marketing. It is completely …   more ›
