Poll: Which Candy Do You Take From Your Child's Halloween Bag?

It's time to confess.

When your kids are done trick-or-treating tonight, you'll likely look through their bags of goodies to make sure everything's safe to consume — and you'll probably take some treats for yourself. Question is, what type of candy will you take? A gooey Twix bar? A crunchy Kit Kat? Some sour SweeTarts?

Dresden Area Full of History and Ghosts [VIDEO]

Workers at Abyss Haunted House, which is in the old Mule Barn, have reported hauntings they did not design.

Dresden Cemetery, on Hansel Road in Channahon, dates back to 1847. The cemetery is full of stories surrounding the move of graves to the new St. Mary's Cemetery in Minooka. In some versions, the ground was spoiled; in others, a giant flood blew out the side of the mountain and bodies and coffins were everywhere. In each version, though, a child's grave or a child's body was unable to be located and it is he or she who haunts the area. Historically speaking, there is some truth to the flood story. Thomas Comerford, one of the early settlers of the area, was trying to bury his wife, but could not so because of a rainstorm. "There was this huge rainstorm when they were trying to bury her and the grave kept filling up with water," Michelle …

VIDEO: Paranormal Research Team Investigates Unrequited Love Haunting

A Chicago area restaurant is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who died after an affair gone wrong.

The Country House in Clarendon Hills is known in the Chicago area for its burgers, but it’s also known for something else. “I took a ghost tour once, many years ago, and one of the stops was this restaurant,” said Diana LaPointe, who has been a longtime patron of the restaurant. Lynn Banks, the restaurant's manager, has worked there for 29 years. She said in that time she's frequently felt the sensation of being watched. "I've seen shadows go by, and you go look and nobody’s there besides you," said Banks. "We’ve had customers that have made comments, especially about the women’s bathroom. They’ll be in one stall then they’ll hear the other one open and close, and they’ll see a shadow or something, but nobody else is in there.” Because of …

Video: Spirits Haunt Cuba Road, White Cemetery

Paranormal activity has been spotted on numerous occasions along Cuba Road near White Cemetery in Barrington.

Have you ever driven down Cuba Road in Barrington and thought you saw something out of the ordinary? Even ghostlike? You aren’t alone. Dozens of people have claimed to see ghosts and other paranormal activity along Cuba Road, specifically around White Cemetery. The so-called haunted cemetery dates back to the 1800s, and its past is teeming with spooky legends. Chicagoland ghost researcher Dale Kaczmarek explains the paranormal activity associated with this spot. “There are a lot of old local legends associated with the cemetery, first of all, including one that was actually started in the 1960s by a Palatine school teacher of a hooked spirit, a man with a hook, that’s been seen out here. It’s an urban legend, it’s nothing more than an …

Ghost Hunter Flashlight Phenomenon Explained? [VIDEO]

A YouTube video has surfaced claiming to debunk the flashlight phenomenon.

A friend emailed me the link to the YouTube video attached to this story after Patch published a story on the flashlight activity at the Country House in Clarendon Hills. I have to admit, I've never watched the show Ghost Hunters or any other reality show like it. Like the readers who have criticized us in the comments since we started this series, I am much too suspicious to believe anything unless I am there to witness it myself—and even then, I'm skeptical. I knew that night there would be no way I could know with absolute certainty that the All City Paranormal team's flashlights weren't rigged, but my flashlight was still sealed in the hard plastic it came in when I got it from my car. The casing had to be cut in order to open the …

Dietitian Offers Tips for Healthier Halloween Treats

Libertyville expert advises staying away from the added sugars in popular Halloween candy.

Passing out Halloween treats doesn’t have to mean sugar overload for our children, according to Joshh Rager, registered dietitian at Advocate Condell Wellness Services. Many healthier options like popcorn, fruit, and trail mix can be bought or made for trick-or-treat bags. “You can get up to four grams of fiber out of a half cup of trail mix, depending on the brand,” Rager said. “And popcorn typically has 1.5 grams of fiber per cup, and basically has no sugar whatsoever.” Rager says while buying Halloween candy watch for added sugars, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavorings, food dyes, and portion sizes. As a dietitian, he tells people to stay under 40 grams of total added sugars, those not naturally occurring in…
