Miss Northern Suburbs 2013 Beth Kamman invites residents to "Phantom Fundraiser."
Eight-year-old Beth Kamman of Lake Zurich is holding a "Phantom Fundraiser"--no one is required to attend, just send money--for the misplaced pets from the West TX fertilizer plant disaster. "Beth, volunteers on animal issues as part of her community service experiences. She was really moved by the explosion in West, particularly because I used to live very close by in Waco," writes Beth's mother Susan E. Kamman. "She is raising money for the Humane Society of Central Texas. There are animals standing in the streets in shock, their homes destroyed and their humans missing. The Humane Society is providing shelter at its premises, and coordinating with other volunteers to foster animals until they can be reunited with their owners. …

The NFL Players Association of Chicago is hosting a charity event from 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesday in McHenry. The March 27th event will be held at Nicolino's Trackside and Sports Bar, 621 Ridgeview Dr., McHenry. The fundraiser benefits the associations' not-for-profit organization, the Retired Professional Football Players of Chicago, which supports Chicagoland youth programs - academically and athletically. The event in McHenry features a meet-and-greet with 30 to 40 former NFL players, as well as photo and autograph opportunities, according to a press release. Lake Zurich realtor Kay Phillips plans to share her 50th birthday with other fitness enthusiasts at Kay’s ½ Century Celebration at Foglia YMCA, Dec. 22, 8 to 10 a.m. The celebration is a fundraiser for the YMCA’s Annual Campaign. Phillips, a realtor at Coldwell Banker in Libertyville and a fitness instructor at Foglia YMCA, said she wanted to do something meaningful for her 50th birthday. “Real estate has been so prosperous. I’ve been so blessed. I’m buying at least 50 prizes and encouraging everyone to come to a big birthday celebration. We’ll be riding for two hours. It’s going to be a blast,” she said. Cancelled: Benefit for Ryland Kollar will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at Lake Zurich American Legion.
Update, Dec. 7 Katherine Hetlet announced that the Ryland Kollar benefit has been cancelled due to personal circumstances. Dec. 5 Lake Zurich resident Ryland Kollar, 23, has been through more pain in his life than anyone should have to endure, said family friend Katherine Hetlet. “He’s a really outgoing kid and he always has a smile on his face no matter what kind of pain he’s in and lately he’s in a ridiculous amount of pain. Yet he’s always there to brighten someone else’s pain,” she said. Ryland has been fighting a rare form of leukemia, T-Cell ALL, since he was 12 years old. Chris Jones, a contestant on Bravo TV's Top Chef, will serve a one-of-a-kind meal in Grayslake to raise money for the Northern illinois Food Bank.
Diners from throughout Chicagoland can experience a unique menu during Dinner for the Cause, a fundraiser to help fight hunger. Chef Chris Jones, a Grayslake local known from being a contestant on Bravo TV's Top Chef, Moto Restaurant of Chicago and Discovery Channel's Future Foods, teamed up with Mike Pruitt, owner of The Vine Martini and Wine Bar in Grayslake. Tickets for the special seven-course meal paired with wine are $100 each. Only 100 tickets are available. The event will be held on Oct. 20. Each day, the staff and volunteers at Maristella in Libertyville receive about 15 calls from people who need help paying their rent or finding housing. "Our goal is to prevent the homelessness," said Fran Forys, one of the founders of the non-profit organization. These days, though, meeting that goal has become tougher with a tighter cash flow. Forys said grant money from the state is running three months behind. "I pray every day, 'Lord, please bring us some big bucks,'" said Forys. "The government money is very scarce. But we have survived. We're trying to keep up good spirits." Next month, the community will have a chance to help Maristella bring in some money to help meet the needs of its clients. Valker Hall in the basement of St. Francis de Sales Church is being converted into a casino with a Jimmy Buffet theme for the 7 p.m.-midnight, Saturday, Jan. 15, “Casino Night in Margaritaville” fundraiser for St. Francis de Sales School. Foglia YMCA fundraiser will treat guests to a look inside the wondrous estate.
The romance of listening to a recording on vinyl, played on an antique victrola, will be amplified dozens of times Saturday at the Foglia YMCA's Gala Masquerade Ball. The ball, celebrating Foglia's 10th anniversary, will be presented at the Sanfilippo Estate, a private residence in Barrington Hills that is home to a world-famous collection of music machines and other antiques. "Everything on display has been meticulously restored and plays the way it was," said Greg Leifel, director of the Sanfilippo Foundation. "Our mission is to showcase the collection and to educate people." The wonderland, housed in the expansive mansion and in a nearby building, is known as the Place de la Musique.
