Residents of Lake Zurich want a thriving Farmer's Market and the village listened. A committee is currently making plans for a market that will be held in Paulus Park, 3-7 p.m., Fridays, starting in mid-late June. "We're so excited and Tom (Poynton) is so excited. He wanted it to be one of the first things that comes out of his administration. He really wants a vibrant place for residents. That is one step toward making Lake Zurich the vibrant place we all want this to be," said Janet Barron, who is leading volunteers on a committee of the Park and Recreation Advisory board. Barron said the park board has been exploring the idea of a village-run market since last August. She and other volunteers including Mary Beth Euker and Susan Miller …

Just curious. Paulus Park is a big area. Will this be clearly visible from Route 12 or will it be buried out-of-view from the road? If the former, it may have a chance. If the latter, it's doomed to fail.   more ›

Lack of attendance and lack of vendors have resulted in an early end to this year's Lake Zurich Heritage Farmers Market, which was being held at Lions Park on Saturday mornings. "I hate to blame it on the weather, but I do think that was it," said organizer Rob Boyce, who is also an organic grower. "I love the markets and even until the last Saturday, it was just me, but it was fun." Boyce sells his produce at other farmers markets including Deerfield, Skokie, Mundelein and Ravinia. Before you go and blame it on the weather, take a harder look at the real reasons why the LZ market did not succeed for the second year in a row. Market to how people search; be where people are; learn what people want and provide it. I would be happy to help on a committee charged with making a future LZ market successful.   more ›

Patch Passport: Venture Out to Woodstock

Top 10 things to do in historic Woodstock Square.

Woodstock Square has been a gathering place since the mid-19th century. Residents of that era, mainly farmers, used to gather in the square to shop for groceries, clothes or other necessities. In the summer, shoppers can buy local food at the Farmers Market on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. A town square is unusual in Illinois. “The founders of Woodstock set the square aside to provide a restful place in town and a nice pastoral setting,” said John Scharres, managing director of the Woodstock Opera House, one of the town’s most notable buildings since 1889. “Other towns that do …
