The Ela Tax Reform Party, challengers to the incumbent Ela First Party, filed a formal objection with the Ela Township Clerk, Jan. 3. The objection alleges that Ela First will not have enough signatures of eligible voters to remain on the ballot after questionable signatures are removed from their petitions. “We very reluctantly took this step when we noticed that some of the people who had allegedly signed the Ela First petitions had moved from the addresses written on the petition years ago,” said Ela Tax Reform Party supervisor candidate Barbara Evans. “We think it is important for the election board to examine these signatures and others of a questionable nature to determine whether the Ela First Party properly handled its …

Barbara Evans, supervisor candidate on the Ela Tax Reform Party slate, filed nominating petitions at the Ela Township offices. “The eight people running on our non-partisan slate are committed to using Ela Township tax dollars more responsibly,” says Evans. “It is often impossible to figure out what our current township leaders are spending our money on. The public is invited to attend a Military Memorial dedication, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov 10, at Fairfield Cemetery located one block south of Old McHenry Road on Fairfield Road in Hawthorn Woods Ela Township’s Fairfield Cemetery is dedicating bronze plaques recognizing those who served in the military. The commemoration coincides with the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and Veterans Day. Two veterans of that war, John J. Brockway and Captain Luther Turner, are among the 25 Veterans buried in the Township’s 1853 one-acre cemetery. In addition, existing, but degraded tombstones will display Bronze medallions bearing the name and service affiliation of nine Civil war veterans, Luther Turner, and Mexican/American war veteran, Luther …

Ela Township and its “55 Plus” program are sponsoring Flu and Pneumonia shots at the Ela Township Community Center in partnership with CVS Pharmacy in Long Grove. “It is important for our Ela Township residents, especially our seniors, to guard against illnesses that are preventable,” said Lucy Prouty, Ela Township supervisor. “We are very happy to have a centralized location at our community center for residents to come and take this necessary precaution.” Registration is required to receive the shots, and residents must bring insurance and/or Medicare cards with them. Ela Township and its “55 Plus” program will hold a free event designed to benefit seniors, and their caregivers regarding Medicare. The informational session will be held at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 2 at the Ela Township Community Center, 380 Surryse Road. An optional lunch for attendees will be served at 11:30 a.m. The event, ‘Medicare 101’ will be taught by a senior health insurance program specialist. Individuals will be given information to navigate the Medicare system, including benefit options, and how to make the best personal choices for the upcoming enrollment period from October 15 until December 7. Ela Township Assessor John Barrington has a warning for everyone: he thinks he has a "very unattractive shaved head." Barrington recently signed up to participate in the St. Baldrick's fundraiser May 6, agreeing to shave his hair to help raise money to find cures for childhood cancers. Barrington and his 14-year-old son, Tommy, decided to participate in the event after reading a story on Lake Zurich Patch. "It's something that we were actually excited about," said Barrington, who also serves as the commander of Lake Zurich American Legion Post 964. Barrington said it's amazing that just over the past couple of years, so many people he knows have been diagnosed with — or died as a result of — cancer. "It touches so many people," said …

From Ela Township Assessor John Barrington: The 2011 assessments have been completed and most properties in Ela Township received a decrease, some substantial. The new values will be mailed/published Nov. 3rd, but I have asked the county to publish the new values online early so that you can contact our office now. Go to www.lakecountyil.gov/assessor and select Property Tax Assessment Information under the Assessment Information tab on the left of the page. Enter your property information and you should see your new 2011 assessment. If you feel the value is overstated you can submit an appraisal, information on your recent purchase, or comparable properties for our review.
