Ela Township is set to debut its new community center Feb. 6, almost a year to the day after the board approved purchasing the former post office building, 380 Surryse Road. The 10,400-square-foot facility will become the new home to a number of existing township offerings. They include the majority of programs available to individuals participating in the Ela Township 55 Plus program, which were formerly housed at Foglia YMCA. A youth after-school homework assistance program sponsored by the Ela Township Social Work Program also will relocate to the new center. Expected project cost at old post office building has nearly tripled, but savings, credits and future revenue sources could make up for it.
Though there was never a set budget, Ela Township officials had hoped to keep the cost of turning the old post office building on Surryse Road into a new community center to about $200,000. But at the board meeting Thursday, trustees learned that number has nearly tripled. The total estimated cost now stands at $586,685, according a memo to the township from Pathmann Construction, project manager. “We discussed roughly $200,000 (in renovations), but when you walk away from it, the final product would be nothing that the township is used to seeing,” said Jeffrey Pathmann, owner of Pathmann Construction. Board also receives update on Community Center, assessor urges seniors to review property tax break.
The Ela Township Board tackled a number of issues at its meeting Thursday night, from providing an update on the storm cleanup to announcing aid given to residents. Kildeer Village Administrator Mike Talbott attended the meeting to express his gratitude for the Ela Township Highway Department and its efforts to help Kildeer with storm cleanup. “The highway department cleared trees and debris and they did a fantastic job,” said Talbott. “We have many subdivisions that have only one way in and out so we are very thankful.” “I consider this part of our job, but I appreciate the acknowledgement,” said Highway Commissioner Bill Kruckenberg. Plans move forward for improvements at Surryse Road post office building, closing on property expected by end of June.
The Ela Township board recently approved a contract with Pathmann Construction Management, Inc. to oversee renovations at the post office building at 380 Surryse Road for a new community center. The proposed Ela Township Community Center will ultimately house growing youth and senior programs, meeting space, and other recreational activities for township residents.
