Thanks for the info about Voter Turnout. I am happy to see that Lake Zurich was higher than the average, but it is still disappointing to see such low numbers all around. I wish more people would realize that local politics has a great impact on them & that it is better to have a voice at the polls on election day, than to simply complain.   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Vince Foglia Supports Ela First

Foglia explains YMCA, Ela Township partnership.

To The Editor:   I am writing to voice my support for Ela First in the upcoming election and to share my perspective on some misinformation about Ela Township and the Foglia YMCA. Together, they have done great work for the community, and I was upset to hear candidates for Ela Township office attacking this work.  In 2000, Ela Township made a $1.5 million contribution to a YMCA Capital Campaign. Through this deal, Ela Township agreed to a 25-year lease for a 2,500 square foot Senior Center and 1,000 square foot Youth Center. This agreement served the people of Ela Township well for the last decade. However, in 2011, both the YMCA and Ela Township had outgrown their space. As a result, Ela Township and the YMCA negotiated a buyout of the …

Clare, I am sorry to hear your cynicism. The answer is to get all of the facts, not just campaign literature, educate yourself, teach your friends and neighbors as well, get out the vote and vote yourself. Our problem at all levels is the public's lack of awareness, special interests getting out the vote. They get that power by shouting you down. The answer is to out-shout them in a manner that …   more ›

Ela Township Announces $459,539 Reduction in Tax Levy

Ela Township portion is about 2 percent of taxpayers' total bill.

The Ela Township Board approved an ordinance reducing the Tax Levy from $2,358,000 to $1,898,461 at its March 14 regular board meeting Thursday night. After months of reviewing the township operating budget Supervisor Lucy Prouty and the Trustees approved a plan to reduce the Tax Levy by $459,539. According to Prouty, the township has been able to set aside eight months’ worth of expenses should any unforeseen issues occur. “Although The Township Officials of Illinois suggest townships have one to one and a half years’ worth of expenses set aside, we feel comfortable with where we stand right now and feel we are in a position to remain financially stable for years to come.”   Ela Township Assessor John Barrington explains “The Tax Levy is …

Ela Reform Says Newsletter Would Use Taxpayer Money to Influence Election

Opposing party asks Ela Township to delay sending spring newsletter.

At its regular meeting on Thursday March 14, the Ela Township Board will discuss and vote on whether to mail the township newsletter immediately before the April 9 consolidated election.  The four-color, four-page, tabloid-size newsletter is mailed to every home in the township and contains articles written by each township official touting their service to the Township.  Barbara Evans, Wayne Wnek and Nancy Shepherdson, members of the Ela Tax Reform Party, opposing the township officials in the April 9 election, have asked the township board to delay publication until the day after the election.  They contend that sending the newsletter immediately before the election amounts to an unethical use of taxpayer money to influence the …

Ela First Promotes Record of Fiscal Responsibility

Supervisor Lucy Prouty says officials work hard to reduce spending and maintain balanced budgets

In preparation for the upcoming elections, the Ela First slate of candidates are promoting their record of success on behalf of the residents of Ela Township. This week they are talking to township voters about their record of fiscal responsibility.  “In these tough economic times, government at every level ought to be tightening its belt just as those people we serve have had to tighten their belts,” explained Lucy Prouty, Ela Township supervisor. “That is why I’m proud that we’ve worked so hard these past eight years to reduce spending and maintain balanced budgets. This allowed us to take on several necessary projects such as the new Town Hall and the Community Center without increasing taxes or borrowing a dime.”  One of the areas …

Ela First has been serving the community impeccably. There is no need to change that leadership. I myself have also been asking why the tax reform party wants to be on the township board? And why doesn't Mr. Abbott work at the township anymore? That is alarming. They have no experience or good ideas- so why even bother running and wasting everyone's time and their own money? I guess they will …   more ›

I wonder why they had to change candidates after they already got their signatures....I would think for sure that should invalidate the signatures and thus running for office. Oh wait, that's what they tried to do to Ela First...haha. We will just wait to watch them fail because that will be much more entertaining then them not running in the first place!   more ›
