Lake Zurich Police Tough on Texting While Driving

Lake Zurich and Sgt. Tracy Goodyear receive award for extra efforts that save lives; September is also Texting and Driving Awareness Month.

“Lake Zurich is on the cutting edge for targeting distracted drivers, and targeting use of cell phones in school zones and construction zones,” said John Gomoll, law enforcement liaison for the Illinois Department of Transportation. Gomoll presented the Lake Zurich Police Department and Sgt. Tracey Goodyear with an award for extra efforts related to distracted driving. Gomoll said those extra efforts help save lives. “The best drivers among us are not safe if we’re northbound and they're soutbound, texting and not paying attention and coming into our lane,” he said. Gomoll noted that for the first time in many years traffic fatality rates are going up and that is due to texting and distracted driving.  Lake Zurich Village President …

Patch Flash: Deadly Party Game Punch Defendant Goes Free

Chicagoland news to talk about: Barrington attorney writes about “John Wayne Gacy. Defending a Monster.’

A Will County judge acquitted Tiffany Startz on charges of battery and reckless conduct Wednesday in the “party game” death of a Romeoville man.  Startz, 22, was charged after admitting to punching John Powell, 25, in the face as part of a dare made by co-defendant Jimmy Mounts at a Crest Hill house party. Mounts, who pleaded guilty last week to lying to police, reportedly offered $5 to anyone willing to be punched in the face by a girl. Startz’s attorney, called the incident “a party stunt that went terribly wrong,” saying Startz acted without malice. Barrington resident Sam Amirante vividly remembers the phone call he received one cold December day in 1978 that would change his life. "Sam, could you do me a favor?" the caller said.  The …

Patch Flash: Forecasts Say La Nina Likely to Bring Another Cold, Snowy Winter

Chicagoland news to talk about: Distracted bicyclists will get tickets in Chicago.

Long-range forecasters are expecting this winter's snowfall and average temperatures to rank the city as home to the nation's worst winter. According to AccuWeather.com's forecast, the Chicago area will likely be clobbered by between 50 and 58 inches of snow this winter -- approximately the same amount as the 56 inches that fell over the city last year. The culprit is La Nina, said Ed Fenelon, meteorologist for the National Weather Service's Chicago office. “In a La Niña pattern, there are mild periods followed by cold outbreaks, and snowy weather. There is a higher than normal risk of severe weather, like the tornadoes we had in November last year,” Fenelon said. The city of Elmhurst has not escaped the emerald ash borer infestation …
