Lake Zurich’s boys team competed in the state meet this past weekend.
Lake Zurich Middle School South’s boys cross country team placed tenth, on a wet, rainy and windy day at the Boys 3A State Cross Country Meet held in Bloomington-Normal on Saturday. Team member Matthew Pereira finished first at the meet. To make it to the State Meet, teams and runners must have qualified through the various Sectional Meets that had been held the previous weekend, said Lake Zurich Middle School South Boys Cross Country Coach Matt Marston. “South had a great team this year. We had a lot of fun and worked hard. There wasn’t a runner on the team who didn’t improve as the year went along. Some students shaved almost five minutes off of their start of the year 2-mile time throughout the course of the season,” Marston said…

Lake Zurich Middle School South boys cross country team finished second at the sectionals last weekend.
The Lake Zurich Middle School South boys Cross Country team is going to the IESA ( Illinois Elementary School Association) state championship in Bloomington-Normal on Saturday, Oct. 13. They finished second at sectionals at Yorkville High School on Oct. 6, and placed three runners in the top 10 at 1st, 7th and 10th place. Sectional team members were: Matthew Pereira, Kyle Griffith, Kyle Fitzgerald, Patrick Burns, Brian Chmiel, Patrick True, Vincent Nguyen, Jack Pogalz, Zack Porlo and Chris DeSort. Team will now compete for the state championship.
The St. Francis de Sales Girls Varsity Cross Country team made history for the Lake Zurich Catholic school. The team won its first ever sectional championship for the school. "It's really cool. It's a great group of girls," said Coach Bill Schaefer. "They accomplished what nobody has ever done before." "Lauren Nelson finished second at the sectional; this is the first time she was second all year. In her five previous races, she was first in all five," Schaefer said. Bears miss first place by just two points to York on a gorgeous day for running in Peoria.
The waiting was the hardest part. After running the race of their lives Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria, the Lake Zurich boys cross country team had to wait almost half-an-hour for the final team results to get posted. When the news came, the boys were unable to contain themselves. "I want to hug everybody,' said senior Victor Delatorre upon hearing that the Bears finished second in the team competition at the Illinois High School Association state final meet. With three finishers in the top 17, the Bears finished in second place, two points behind storied York.
