Board Hears Progress Report on District 95 Student Drug Testing

Board continues to work out policy details and hiring coordinator.

Steps towards making a decision about randomly drug testing students at Lake Zurich High School were discussed by the Board of Education at its Thursday night Committee of the Whole meeting. A group of administrators and teachers from District 95 comprised of: Michael J. District 95 Releases 22 Staff Members

Low enrollment and performance issues are the resaons for the release of district employees.

The release of 22 Community Unit School District 95 staff members from their jobs was approved by the school board on Thursday night. “We are not releasing staff due to economic reasons, it’s due to declining enrollment or performance issues,” said Kathy Brown, board president. The resolutions included dismissal and non-renewal of two part-time non-tenured teachers: The dismissal and non-renewal of 13 first, second, and third year probationary teachers: The honorable dismissal of seven certain educational support personnel: All affected staff have been notified that their last day working for the District will be Wednesday, June  8, said Julia Becich, director of human resources. District 95 Names New Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations

Vicky Cullinan is no stranger to District 95, with prior 12 years of service.

Vicky Cullinan is the new full-time assistant superintendent of business and operations of Community Unit School District 95, the board announced at its Thursday night meeting. “I’m looking forward to bringing continuity to the district, re-establishing relationships, making new ones, and having a positive impact on the district and students,” said Cullinan, a Gurnee resident. Michael Engel had been serving as interim assistant superintendent of business and operations for the district and has taken a full-time position in Hazel Crest. Survey: Parents Favor Student Drug Testing

School board weighs the pros and cons of implementing a student drug test program.

The topic has gained traction after a recent survey conducted by District 95 indicated most parents are in favor of instituting a drug testing program for high school students. During the recent Committee of the Whole meeting, the Community Unit School District 95 Board of Education revisited the debate about initiating some sort of drug testing program among Lake Zurich High School students. The survey, conducted primarily via e-mail, specifically asked about testing students who are involved in extracurricular activities such as athletics and clubs, as well as those who have parking permits. In the survey, 52 percent of respondents said they strongly support random drug testing at the high school, 20 percent said they somewhat support it…

186 District 95 Students Use English Language Learner Program

Program assists students in becoming more fluent and literate in English

There are currently 186 students who have accepted services from Community Unit School District 95’s English Language Learner (ELL) program, according to Stacie Noisey, school administrator. Noisey presented a program update at the recent District 95 Committee of the Whole meeting.  The program assists bilingual students in becoming more fluent in speaking English, as well as improving their reading skills. Currently, ELL students are mostly serviced through a pull-out model at the elementary schools. At the middle schools and high school, students are serviced during regularly scheduled periods, and may be seen more than one period a day. “The program builds information in the students’ native language, and then transitions students into …

Improvements to District 95's Technology Program Reviewed

Board discusses present, future improvements and upgrades.

With a three-year technology plan wrapping up at the end of the school year, the Community Unit School District 95 Board of Education recently received a sneak preview of some of the updates that could be implemented. Crystal Steker, the district’s director of technology, discussed some of the possibilities with the board during its March 10 Committee of the Whole meeting. “We’ve tried out several pilot programs at the elementary school and high school level,” Steker said. “The results are very encouraging." Student Enrollment Declines in District 95

Trend will continue for at least the next five years, study shows.

Student enrollment will continue to decline gradually over the next five years in Community Unit School District 95 schools, following a trend over the past 10 years. This was the conclusion of a demographic study update presented by Sarah Kemp, an associate researcher from the University of Wisconsin, Madison Applied Population Laboratory. Kemp presented her findings at the Committee of the Whole school board meeting last week. "While in past studies some grades experienced an increase in student enrollment while others declined, all models in the district are projected to decline from kindergarten through the 12th grade over the next five years," said Kemp. Early Voting Begins Monday Morning for April Consolidated Election

Polls open from March 14 through March 31 for early voters.

Early voting for the Tuesday, April 5, Consolidated Election begins Monday, March 14, according to Willard Helander,  Lake County  clerk. Early voting is available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, through Thursday, March 31. Voters can visit LakeVoterPower.info and enter information to confirm their registration at their current address, see a sample ballot and find their early voting location. Summer Improvements to Schools Outlined

Committee of the Whole previews District 95 2011-2012 budget.

Summer roof repairs to schools will account for $1 million of the Community Unit School District 95 budget. The Committee of the Whole discussed the budget and planned capital improvements on Thursday night. If all the roofs in need of repair were fixed, the cost would be around $3 million, according to Michael Engel, the school district’s interim assistant superintendant of business operations. Sarah Adams, Spencer Loomis, Middle School North, Seth Paine, May Whitney,  and Lake Zurich High School all require asphalt, roof, and various other repairs.  The projects are expected to begin around June 13, at the conclusion of the current school year. Candidates Provide Their Views on School Issues

Four candidates running to fill three open postions on the school board.

Jim Burke, Doug Goldberg, Tony Pietro and Chris Wallace, the four candidates who are running, had an opportunity to discuss their views on a number of school-related topics during the school board candidate forum The forum was held Thursday night at Middle School North. There are three open seats on the board up for election on Tuesday, April 5. A second forum, sponsored by the Community Unit School District 95 PTOs, will be held 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, in the Middle School South Cafeteria.
