The Lake Zurich Police Department's Citizens Police Academy is going into its fourth week, and feedback from participants is nothing but positive. Individuals enrolled in the academy have come from a variety of backgrounds, and the reasons why they took part in the program are equally diverse. Nina Balcer of Lake Zurich has always had a strong interest in law enforcement and forensics, and is considering some type of career in criminal justice. Balcer has a bachelors degree in biology and may want to continue her education in a specific direction based on what she learns while in the academy. After a successful inaugural year, the second year of the Lake Zurich Police Department's Citizens Police Academy is now underway, aiming to give residents a unique perspective on the many duties police officers carry out. The 10-week program includes classroom education as well as hands-on experiences in areas such as crime scene processing, DUI/traffic enforcement and firearms training.
