Church Graveyard to Tell its Stories in Hawthorn Woods

Ela Historical Society to hold a Cemetery Walk, Saturday, at St. Matthew's Church.

The Ela Historical Society, along with St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods, will host a cemetery walk at the church, Saturday, Aug. 4. Tours are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.  The walk will bring back memories from the past about the families that started the church and made the Ela area grow.  St. Matthew's is the oldest church in Lake Zurich area; its cornerstone was laid in 1863. The church was founded by the many German settlers who came to the area. In 1864, the congregation voted that each member receive a free lot in the cemetery. Non-members could buy a lot for $5. In 1885, members discussed whether a suicide could be buried in the cemetery. They decided to bury the person outside the cemetery fence. As the cemetery …

Scatter Garden Established at Lake Zurich Cemetery

Garden provides practical alternative to burial and plots.

As the cost for burial plots rise and cemetery space becomes more limited, many people are turning to scatter gardens as a final resting place for their loved ones. Lake Zurich Cemetery Clairview Court at Church Street, has a new scatter garden which was dedicated on September 9.  The garden is owned and was built by Ela Township. Scatter gardens have gained popularity in recent years, and are a welcome place for those who have cremation ashes but don't have direction on where the deceased preferred their ashes to be dispersed.  A bronze plaque at the Lake Zurich Scatter Garden reads "A Garden of Treasured Memories - Come find peace here . . . and remember." Each person whose ashes are dispersed there will have an engraved nameplate with …
