The NFL draft begins at 7 p.m. in New York. We take a look back at some of the Bears worst draft mistakes.
The NFL draft begins at 7 p.m. Thursday and the Chicago Bears have the 19th overall pick. The Bears have a checkered draft history, to say the least. For every Walter Payton, there’s a Rashaan Salaam. But, of all Bears mistakes on draft day, which is the worst? We did our best to compile a list of worthy nominees and we limited our choices to the first round: Those are our nominees. Vote in the comment section, or feel free to tell us who you think was the Bears worst draft pick.
Six-run sixth inning the difference-maker as Lake Zurich wins third in a row.
Look out, here come the Bears. Lake Zurich won their third straight game Monday, defeating the Zion-Benton Zee-Bees by a score of 8-3, as they improved their record to 11-14 and their conference record to 6-7. Lake Zurich defeated Hersey 5-3 on Saturday, when Mark Dorfman and Jeremy Reusch each doubled and winning pitcher Mike Irgang pulled even on the season at 3-3, striking out five and walking two. Last Thursday, the Bears avenged a loss to conference rival Stevenson the previous Tuesday, winning on the road handily, 11-3 behind the solid pitching of Mike Lutz. Stevenson had beaten them at home 5-4 in the first game of the home-away match-up. It was the Patriots’ first conference loss of the season after nine straight wins. “We’re …
Lake Zurich Quarterback Club's annual fundraising party exceeds expectations.
This year’s theme for the Lake Zurich Quarterback Club (LZQC) was “Tradition Tailgate,” and if the spread of food provided by Eduardo’s Catering in Wauconda was at every tailgate party, the actual game might be in danger of becoming an afterthought. Held on Saturday, the 13th annual Spring Fling Fundraiser, helps to raise money for the entire football program. The event was held at the Knights of Columbus, on the second floor at 365 Surryse Rd. The evening’s festivities included an open bar, an assortment of tasty appetizers provided by the afforementioned Eduardo’s Catering, a silent auction, a raffle and a baggo tournament. “We had close to 200 people in attendance and raised over $11,0000,” said LZQC president Phil Johnson. “We …
Slaughter rule halts game after five innings.
The Bears two games against Libertyville on Tuesday and Wednesday couldn’t have been more different. In Tuesday’s contest in Libertyville, Bears pitcher Ben Gullo dueled the Wildcat’s Joey Eichmann as Libertyville squeezed out a narrow 2-0 victory. But in Wednesday's home game, the Wildcats routed the Bears 13-3, as the game ended after five innings because of the slaughter rule. On Wednesday, Libertyville did what they weren’t able to do on Tuesday: score early and often, knocking in four runs off Bears starter Mike Schnur in the first inning. Joey Ruppert walked on four pitches, and advanced to third when Schnur threw wildly to first baseman Parker Asmann. Moments later, Nick Coutre belted his second home run in two days—both shots in …
Coach Gary Simon zeroes in on defense as primary area for improvement.
Lake Zurich High School varsity baseball coach Gary Simon was calm and collected as he stood by the visitor’s dugout at Mundelein High School last week. His team had just lost 11-0, as the Mustangs walked off the field in the bottom of the sixth inning because they had just crossed the slaughter rule threshold. Jordan Wiegold’s smash line drive double was the final blow, driving in the last two runs. Simon, while not thrilled with his team’s performance, also was not overly concerned. He preferred taking the long view, aware that there are plenty of games left in the season to make amends. “We just need to get ready for our next game up in Waukegan,” he said. “We didn’t play like this in the tournament last week,” Simon said, referring to…
11-0 Mundelein lead ends it in the bottom of the sixth.
After Tuesday’s 9-1 pasting by visiting Mundelein, it would have been a tall order for the Lake Zurich High School Bears baseball team to avenge that loss on Wednesday, especially given that the 9-0 Mustangs had home field advantage. Wednesday’s outcome was even uglier, as the Bears succumbed to the slaughter rule after Mundelein scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 11-0 lead. “This is by far the best Mundelein team that I’ve seen in my 11 years here,” said Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon. “They’ve got a lot of things working for them: pitching, hitting, good defense. Their pitching looks real good.” After putting it all together in Tuesday’s dominant win, the Mustangs were hard-pressed to outdo themselves in …

Lake Forest ties the game on a 3-point shot at the end of regulation before surging to a 60-49 overtime win.
So close yet so far. Through careful, well-executed ball control, Lake Zurich nursed a slender lead against Lake Forest in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter in their Monday night IHSA quarterfinals game. Leading 45-42 with seven seconds left on the clock, the Scouts’ coach Phil LaScala called a time out. “I told our guys that we’ll probably get one shot, and make it a good one,” said LaScala. That’s exactly what junior guard Thomas Durrett did. Aided by a perfect kick-out by teammate John Hayes, Durrett nailed a 3-pointer up left of the free throw line, tying the game at 45 to send it into overtime. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Scouts then proceeded to play their best basketball of the evening, outscoring Lake Zurich in the four…
A pictorial tribute to some of the people whose contributions are an important part of every Bears basketball game.
There's more than just the Bears boys basketball team hitting the hardwood floor at each home game. It takes an entire cast of characters to put it all together.
