Lake Zurich Flames Football Gets New Look

Logo represents roots of youth organization that was started by volunteer firefighters.

The Lake Zurich Flames youth football organization will be starting this year’s season with a new look. The Flames recently introduced their new, professionally designed logos for youth football and cheerleading. “In the past two years we have been updating our uniforms. We wanted to get more in line with the high school colors and are going toward a blue base,” said Flames board member and coach Keith Mescha.   Mescha said board members liked the idea of keeping with theme of a fireman badge. “People don’t understand why we are called the Flames. It’s our history; we were started by volunteer firemen and we wanted to keep with our roots,” he said.   Mescha said this is the first time the Flames will have a unified look with its spirit …

Lacrosse: The Fastest Game is Growing Fast Too

Lake Zurich Lacrosse Club attracts youth to action-packed sport.

Lacrosse, deemed the fastest-growing sport in the nation, also may be the fastest-growing sport in Lake Zurich, judging by the numbers. The Lake Zurich Lacrosse Club was founded in 2003 with 28 kids. Today, there are more than 500 athletes participating in Lake Zurich lacrosse, said Dave Kintzer, president and one of the founders of the club. “Once kids try lacrosse, they fall in love with it. It’s a constantly moving action-packed type of sport,” Kintzer said.  Lacrosse, which has elements similar to basketball, hockey and soccer, also is a strategy game, Kintzer said. “It’s like a chess match,” he said.  Lacrosse traces its roots to Native American games and rituals. The sport has been played in Eastern colleges since the 19th century, …

Pro Baseball Pick 'Em Contest Winner Announced

Patch user "mp" guessed that the teams would combined for 33 runs, two fewer than the actual total of 35.

Editor's note: Due to an oversight, the winner of this contest was incorrectly announced on Tuesday. We sincerely regret the error. It shouldn’t be surprising that most entrants in Patch’s Pro Baseball Pick ‘Em Contest did not give the batters enough credit in making their selections. Milwaukee outscored Chicago 18-17 in the three-game series over the weekend, and few participants counted on 35 total runs from the teams battling for last place in the division. By guessing the teams would score 33 runs (Brewers 19, Cubs 14), Patch user "mp" was chosen to win the $100 gift card good for pro baseball apparel. Thanks to everyone who participated. Enjoy the rest of the baseball season!
