Back in 1972, the Ela Area Public Library was housed in the basement of St. Francis Church. Today, it is a nationally ranked four-star library, according to the Library Journal, an honor that should not be taken lightly. Of 7,115 libraries reviewed by the Journal, only 256 make its star list, which is based on many criteria including circulation, how many items are checked out annually, and internet computer use. Not only does it have extensive book, audio book, CD, DVD, video game and magazine collections, but it also hosts private events for non-profit organizations, offers study rooms, has a conference room, two outdoor patios and a cozy reading area on the second floor. There also are many programs offered for children, teens, and adults.
