Wind Chill Could Reach 30 Below Tonight; Advisory Issued

A wind chill advisory has been issued for Lake County — as well as for the rest of the Chicago area and much of Illinois — from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 11 a.m. Thursday.

Wind chill values will drop to around 20 below zero by 10 p.m. and then to 22 to 28 below zero—reaching as low as 30 below in some areas—before Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to quickly fall to around zero and continue to fall to several degrees below zero overnight.

In addition, wind gusts could reach between 25 to 35 mph.

"With the fresh powdery-like snowfall, the gusty winds overnight will create areas of blowing and driving snow through Thursday morning," according to the NWS.

Frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes under these conditions, according to the NWS.
