Lake Zurich Resident Finalist in Our Town, Our Heroes Program

Vote for Megan McDowell as GM finalist through May 16.

Lake Zurich resident Megan McDowell is one of three finalists selected for General Motors’ Our Town, Our Heroes program in a special round honoring Illinois military supporters.

McDowell was nominated for her work with the Family Readiness Group (FRG) for the 16th Psychological Operations Battalion in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and for her ongoing support of the military. Beginning May 2, the public can vote for their favorite hero at DrivingtheMidwest.com through May 16. The hero will be announced on May 17.

McDowell’s sister, Carrie Gowans, nominated her for the Our Town, Our Heroes program, describing McDowell as a proud military supporter and a wonderful wife and mother.

“Through her work with the FRG, Megan held fundraisers and welcome home receptions for Illinois military servicemen and women. She also supported the families in her FRG by sending boxes to every soldier in the unit while deployed,” wrote Gowans in her nomination. “Megan understands military life, as her husband, Steve McDowell, served our country during two deployments with the United States Army. She continues to support the military and is currently organizing a race to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.”

General Motors launched the Our Town, Our Heroes program in 2011 to recognize and reward unsung heroes who are inspiring and empowering others in their local communities. Each month, the program narrows down nominations and opens voting of the featured finalists to the public to select the winner. The hero and his or her nominator receive a one-week loan of an all-new Chevrolet vehicle and a full tank of gas. New to the program this year, the winning hero also receives $500 in gift cards, and the second place hero and his or her nominator each receive a one-week vehicle loan.
