Junior Girl Scouts Volunteer In the Community

The girls are setting up a recycling center for a preschool with some help from a fundraiser at Culver's, 645 N. Rand Rd, Lake Zurich, 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday. Eat Culver's from 5 to 8 p.m. and 10 percent goes to the scouts.

A select group of 10- and 11-year-old girls from two Lake Zurich Junior Girl Scout Troops has chosen to come together to work toward earning the Girl Scout Bronze award.

This is the highest award possible for a Junior Girl Scout to attain.

While there are several requirements that the girls need to fulfill in order to achieve this level of recognition, the commitment to pursue the Bronze award is a choice.

Over the past eight months, these girls, along with several other local girl scouts have completed training and service projects that prepared them to further their commitment to Scouting through the Bronze award.

Under the guidance of Girl Scout Leader, Sarah Lopinski, the girls are learning skills that will continue to serve them well throughout their lives.

As Lopinski said, “The idea behind finding a Bronze award project to work on, is to first have the girls observe areas of the community and think about project ideas that would make a difference.“

Once a worthy community project has been chosen by the girls, the real work begins. The girls brainstorm ideas within the group, set goals and realistically assign responsibilities toward completing their goal.

Meetings are set, project homework is assigned and hours are logged; all of which has to be turned into the local Girl Scout Council in order for each girl to receive their award.

In this case, the project is to create a recycling center within the Long Grove Country School, 20400 Hicks Road, Long Grove.

The center will create a focal point for the children to learn the importance of recycling while empowering them to make a difference.

In order for the girls to create the center, they will need some financial help from the community.
