Major roadways in the Chicago area appeared to be clear of ice and snow before 8 a.m. this morning as a freezing rain advisory remains in effect for northern Illinois though 3 p.m. today, according to the Illinois.

ABC 7 reported no incidents as of 7 a.m. on any of the Chicago area's major highways. The Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported several motor vehicle accidents across the area late last night and "black ice" conditions on roadways.

Meanwhile, the freezing rain advisory is in effect up until 3 p.m. for Lake, McHenry and DeKalb counties during what is expected to be the busiest holiday travel day for Chicago's tollways.

Temperatures could be close to the freezing mark for the Chicago area this afternoon and into tonight, which could cause "a glaze of ice…especially on untreated roads or elevated surfaces," according to the National Weather Service.

Nearly 1.6 million vehicles are anticipated to be on the road Friday. On an average day, about 1.4 million vehicles use the Tollway.

A winter storm watch will take effect Saturday evening and will continue through Sunday afternoon for Lake, McHenry and DeKalb counties. Significant snow and ice accumulations with a possible mix of freezing rain could make for dangerous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Three to five inches of new snow and sleet could fall in Lake Zurich Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
