Lake County Fielders Recruiting Support

The minor league baseball team works at making a comeback in local communities.

With three weeks left in the minor league baseball season, the Lake County Fielders are determined to end on a positive note.

“There has absolutely been some craziness this year but we will work it out,” said Kelly Wells, community relations and promotions manager for the team.

The Fielders are making every effort possible to pull out of an unfavorable slump of roster changes, financial woes, and cancelled games and road trips.

This Saturday, Aug. 20, some Fielders players are scheduled to attend the Batter Up event at the .

“We thought last year’s event was such a success, we wanted to do it again,” said Sue Kordek, a coordinator with the Youth Services Department at the library.

The event is expected to attract at least 100 people. There will be baseball themed crafts and activities along with a chance to win tickets to a future Fielders game. There is also a meet-and-greet scheduled with at least two of the baseball players.

“The older kids really enjoy seeing the pro players. It’s neat for them,” Kordek said.

“Our number one goal is community outreach,” said Wells. “It’s nice for our kids and families to have access to our players.”

Earlier this week, however, the Fielders were unsure if they would be able to attend the event, let alone have a team to finish off the season. But the minor league organization said it is determined to give baseball to the fans who want it.

While there have been struggles, rumors and frustrations, Wells thanks the community for not giving up on the team; expressing just how important events like the Batter Up scheduled at the library are.

“We’re working it all out but we really need the communities support to do that,” she said.

Batter Up is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 20. The event is free but pre-registration is required. Contact the to sign up.
