Weird of the Week: Website Says Teachers Seeking Sugar Daddies

From the department of bizarre press releases: Seeking Arrangement.com claims 356 Chicago-area teachers are moonlighting as sugar babies to make up for low pay and out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

One can argue teachers earn low wages and often spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of their own money buying classroom supplies. But are some of these educators actually turning to “sugar daddies” to fill in the financial gaps?
Dating website SeekingArrangement.com claims 40,000 public school teachers across the country — and 356 in the Chicago area — are doing just that. The site says it has experienced an influx of teachers signing up to find a match prior to the start of the new school year.

“You can’t expect a teacher to accept less pay for more work than their peers, and then reach into their pockets to fund your child’s classroom,” said Brandon Wade, the site’s founder and CEO, in the press release. “But that’s what’s happening. If those are the expectations and pressures we are putting on our teachers in America, than they can’t possibly be judged for whatever extracurricular activities they choose to pursue to stay afloat."

The average registered public school teacher on the site is between 28 and 33 years old, and asks for approximately $3,000 a month in financial assistance from her “sugar daddy,” according to a press release.

The top five city school districts for “Sugar Teachers,” according to the site, are Philadelphia, Miami-Dade, Los Angeles County, Clark County Nevada and New York.
