Fr. David F. Ryan, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish, visited the Lake Zurich High School (LZHS) Choir, recently, to hand deliver a donation of $23,480.25. The money will help fund the Choir’s upcoming trip to Rome, Italy, where they will perform in St. Peter’s Basilica at The Vatican.
The funds were raised by St. Francis de Sales parishioners the weekend of Dec.15-16, when approximately 100 members of the LZHS Choir performed Christmas songs and worship songs at five Masses throughout the weekend. In an effort to support the community’s youth, the parish took up a second collection for the LZHS Choir’s trip to Rome.
During his recent visit to the high school, Fr. Ryan spoke to the choir about what a blessing it was to hear them perform songs of the Christmas season. The parish appreciated the presence of the Choir at each of the Masses at which they performed.
“It was an honor to hear these young people raising their voices in praise to God. We are proud to support these talented young people, who will represent not only the youth from our parish, but from our community as a whole, as they travel to The Vatican,” said Fr. Ryan
In March of 2013, 122 members of the LZHS Choir will travel from O’Hare to Dublin and then to Rome. On Friday, March 22, they will participate in the 5 p.m. Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica at The Vatican. The destination for the trip was chosen by Nick Juknelis, director of Vocal Music at LZHS. Juknelis recently traveled to Italy and decided it was a trip that his students would enjoy. They applied to sing at The Vatican and after a strict screening process, their music was approved.
Juknelis reflected upon the experience performing at St. Francis de Sales in saying, “We are all part of the same community and it was a blessing to be able to spend that time together.”
