'Parents: You Matter' Drug Education Comes to LZHS

The most dangerous words a parent can say is "Not my kid," according to drug prevention experts.

This dynamic “Parents: You Matter” education program will give parents helpful tools and resources for drug and alcohol prevention and early intervention. The free program created by The Partnership at DrugFree.org will be held Thursday, May 3, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the

Presenters will be: Lea Minalga, director of Hearts of Hope and certified drug counselor, and the Kane County Sheriff ’s Office. Additional speakers will include Michelle Hines, member of HOH and individuals personally affected by addiction.

  • Heroin use is a growing epidemic among teens and young adults in affluent suburbs.
  • Everyday, 2,500 teens abuse a prescription drug for the first time.
  • Synthetic drugs, such as K2 or Spice (fake pot), are causing seizures and paranoid delusions in kids who are using it.
  • Kids who learn alot about the risks of drugs from their parents are 50 percent less likely to use.
