Parents Share Thoughts On Random Drug Testing

What did parents have to say at last night's meeting about random drug testing at Lake Zurich High School?

As the debate continues regarding whether to start a random drug testing program at Lake Zurich High School, parents have weighed in on the topic.

Among the 20 people present at last night's special meeting, five were concerned parents and community members who addressed the board during public comment.

"There is no other way to put a dent or slow down the drug problem," said Tom Habley, a chemical and drug dependency counselor at Stevenson High School.

Parent Dan Fewkes, however, questioned the need for random drug testing.

"Chief Finlon from the Lake Zurich Police Department says there is no drug problem in Lake Zurich, so why are we here?" he asked.

Parent Kim Roach added of the drug testing, "“This is just another way for the kids to hate school and not want to be here."

Another parent, Keith Petropoulos, called the meeting premature.

“Remove random drug testing from the agenda," he said.

After public comment, Board President Kathy Brown addressed everyone.

“We are not here to take a vote or make a final decision,” said Brown. “This is a working meeting to hammer out the details about what a potential program would look like.”
