Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 authorized a feasibility study to examine the cost, the code requirements and other issues related to installing air conditioning in five schools, according to the Lake Zurich Courier.
District 95 parent Andrea Trudeau started a petition asking the Board of Education to improve the air quality in schools, which includes installing air conditioning in the schools without it. The petition was started following the heat wave in August when students had to sit in classrooms where temperatures reached 90 or 100 degrees.
Trudeau has obtained more than 400 signatures and has created a blog post that has had more than 2,500 page views.
The cost of installing air conditioning in the schools has been estimated at $20 million and board members said the district would have to consider a referendum to cover the expense, the Lake Zurich Courier reported.
District 95 expects to discuss the study at a December meeting.
