Demolition To Start Soon On Part Of May Whitney

The administration aims to complete the demolition of May Whitney before the school year begins.

Demolition is expected to begin this month on a portion of May Whitney School.

At a board meeting last month, the Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 board gave the go-ahead to start the demolition of a portion of May Whitney. The board also approved a resolution to sell Charles Quentin Elementary School, 21250 Shirley Road, Palatine, for no less than $1.46 million.

“There are possibly two parties who have shown interest in the purchase of the property,” said Board President Kathy Brown.

District 95’s Board of Education gave the green the light to begin demolition of the abandoned part of May Whitney Elementary by approving the recommended bids by the administration. The demolition itself will be completed by American Demolition at a cost not to exceed $259,800, while the asbestos abatement will be performed by J. P. General Construction Inc., at a cost not to exceed $41,400.

The budget for the entire project is $1.17 million. Bids for the site restoration project go before the board on July 28.

Lyle Erstad, director of facilities and grounds, gave an update of the progress of the demolition last month.

“Currently, a safety fence around the demolition site is going up and the demolition company is removing anything that is loose inside,” said Erstad.

The demolition company is responsible for removing furnishings, loose equipment, casework, and ventilators.

“We are right on schedule and have gained five days because the abatement contractor can finish a week earlier than we first estimated,” explained Erstad.

The expected schedule is as follows:

  • Now – Demolition preparation, including removal of furnishings and loose equipment; and removal of casework and unit ventilators.
  • July 11 – Start of asbestos abatement
  • July 20 – Begin building and pavement demolition
  • Aug. 9 – Begin backfill and rough grading; and start of building restoration and closure.
  • Aug. 17 – Expected completion of demolition
  • Aug. 18 - Start of landscaping and site restoration

Erstad said the site restoration will include a new playground, concrete work, landscaping and parking lot repair.

The anticipated completion date of the site restoration and landscaping portion of the May Whitney project is in mid-September.
