Outburst Disrupts LZ Village Board Meeting

Audience member reacts to board's decision on LZ Promenade proposal.

An expletive filled outburst disrupted the Lake Zurich village board meeting late Monday following a vote on a downtown proposal.

The board declined a plan by LZ Promenade following a lengthy discussion. Village President Tom Poynton thanked developer John Breugelmans for his efforts.

Breugelmans wished Lake Zurich luck but added, “it is a disaster what is going on in the organization of your staff. It is a disaster.”

Poynton tried to stop the comments, but Bruegelmans said it was his right to make the comments. Poynton said it was not his right to bash the staff.

An audience member then began shouting, “I think you guys are a bunch of (expletive) idiots. I’ve owned property eight years in this village and you guys are (expletive) everything.”

Poynton said the audience member was out of order.

“No, he is not out of order. He is speaking the right language. It is a (expletive) up,” Breugelmans said. “You should be ashamed of running a village like this. You are ruining it.”

“I guess we understood where they stand,” Poynton said after the two men left.

Poynton later apologized to residents for the outburst. He said it the village had known it was coming, the board would never let it happen.
