Less Snow Means More Money for Ela Township

Reducing office space at Foglia YMCA also saves funds.

Less snow means more money for Ela Township because the Highway Department is using less resources to clear roads during winter.

“We are estimating around 20 percent less salt usage this year compared to last due to snowfall being around five inches less than 2009-2010,” said Bill Kruckenberg, highway commissioner, at the Jan. 13 Ela Township board meeting.

The unused salt is not only good for the environment, but helps the township budget as well, said Krukenberg. Ela Township budgets approximately $245,000 for snow removal.

In other money-saving matters, Ela Township will save about $20,00 a year on on rent it pays to the Foglia YMCA for office space. The township voluntarily gave up office space at the Y used by Susan Kostner for the Omni Youth Services program.

The move also helps out the YMCA to make way for its expansion plans.  The township will continue to run the youth services program at the Y, but in a smaller space.

“The savings will be around $300,000 for the township over the next 15 years,” said Jack Reck, trustee who has been negotiating the move with Foglia YMCA.
