Lake Zurich Brings Back Lake Michigan Water Discussion

Special board meeting scheduled Saturday, October 5.

It’s been a topic Lake Zurich has talked about for a few years, the possibility of using Lake Michigan as a water supply source.

Now, the village’s Board of Trustees is starting the discussion again. A special board meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, October 5 at village hall, 70 E. Main Street.

Lake Zurich worked with the Metropolitan Planning Council and other groups on a study looking into developing a water supply, storm water and resource management plan in 2011. Lake Zurich uses a municipal well water system and the aquifer is not recharging fast enough to meet demand, officials have said.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resource has approved Lake Zurich to obtain Lake Michigan water, but the village has not made a decision to tap into the Lake nor has it decided how to pay for the multimillion project.
