Ela Reform Says Newsletter Would Use Taxpayer Money to Influence Election

Opposing party asks Ela Township to delay sending spring newsletter.

At its regular meeting on Thursday March 14, the Ela Township Board will discuss and vote on whether to mail the township newsletter immediately before the April 9 consolidated election.  The four-color, four-page, tabloid-size newsletter is mailed to every home in the township and contains articles written by each township official touting their service to the Township.

Barbara Evans, Wayne Wnek and Nancy Shepherdson, members of the Ela Tax Reform Party, opposing the township officials in the April 9 election, have asked the township board to delay publication until the day after the election.  They contend that sending the newsletter immediately before the election amounts to an unethical use of taxpayer money to influence the election.  The Ela Tax Reform Party members have stated in person to Supervisor Lucy Prouty and by email that because the newsletter presents actions by elected officials in a way likely to influence the opinions of voters, the distribution of the newsletter should be postponed.

Members of the Ela Tax Reform Party also earlier requested that they be allowed to insert an educational article into the newsletter but were refused by Supervisor Prouty.

All of the members of the Ela Township Board are up for election on April 9 except for Trustee Anne Dobbertin.

Members of the Ela Tax Reform Party include:  Barbara Evans for Supervisor, Wayne Wnek for Assessor, Paul Jankowski for Clerk, Randy Abbott for Highway Commissioner, and Trustee candidates Mike Jennings, Vaseem Iktekhar, Nancy Shepherdson and Tony Lombardo.

This news release was submitted by the Ela Tax Reform Party.

So the summary of this article is that the tax reform party has nothing better to talk about than a newsletter.....
Crimek March 13, 2013 at 06:11 pm
So it seems that Mr. Abbott is not the only member of the tax reform party to spin the truth around to the dark side. I guess you consider information about your party and candidates to be an "educational article" - I don't think so. We get the newsletter twice a year, every year, not just election years. The newsletter always has the same format - it tells us what services are offered in the township and any updates since the previous newsletter. I don't have alot of degrees, but isn't that what a township newsletter should contain??? I hope when this election is over you find something to keep you busy, Ms. Evans. You seem to have alot of free and useless time on your hands. I, for one, am tired of seeing your face plastered everywhere. I'm also tired of listening to you whine.......

Barbara Evans must think the voters in Ela Township are stupid! So its political if the current board sends out the normal newsletter in the same month it always is sent out but they should be allowed to put something in there at the expense of the taxpayers, what a joke not like I was ever going to vote for them but now I'm going to make sure I tell everyone else not to as well. Do these people have anything better to do with their time then harass the people that are doing good I mean do they have a job other than wasting our hard earned money. They way I see it just trying to get elected has already cost us unnecessary money. Well Guess what Ms. Evans I am college educated and so are many of the other residents here and we aren't falling for your tricks!

Well, geez, have any of you considered that this mailer is going out right before an election? That means my family is paying for the candidates election effort. I don't care if this has been done in the past, it is wrong. It is the same type of shenaigan pulled by corrupt politicians. I will vote for the incumbents UNLESS they send this mailer. I am tired of big spending by the Township as the residents suffer.

It's time for a change at the township level. This example of the newsletter going out right before the election is indicative of flexing their proverbial muscle by Ela First. They can control what's in it and no one can stop them. The newsletter is a waste of taxpayers money to begin with but to use it to tout their accomplishments at my expense is not a good optic and if they were smart they would either allow equal time at taxpayers' expense or delay the publication of the newsletter. I like Ela Tax Reform's proposal to rebate tax dollars to the taxpayer. That makes sense. I'd like to see Ela Tax Reform consider doing away with the township government. It is redundent and the majority of Ela township taxpayers do not benefit from the township governement. It's time to remove this additional taxing body.

Obviously you are speaking without knowing what you are speaking of. I was just on the township website and read the current newsletter. Looks to me that there are several pieces of information that are very important to ALL township residents. It does not seem that the Ela First board has used it to promote themselves. By the way....pretty tired of all of the negatives put out by the so called "reform" party. How much did it cost all of us tax payers for Ela Tax Reform to hold a hearing objecting to signatures from the Ela First Party? I have got to think thousands....that's an awesome way to start reform!

Speaking of the incumbent using a taxpayer funded periodical as a campaign piece...Lake Zurich residents received their Newsline yesterday and low and behold, the mayor has discovered economic development! Normally she does a half page feel good about what's happening, but for the issue just before the election, she devotes an ENTIRE page to what is happening with economic development issues in the village. She also managed to not only put herself first in the list of all candidates running for all offices, but she broke it up by party affiliation and then singled herself out from all the other candidates running for mayor. She could have taken the opportunity for a non partisan approach, encouraging people to vote, but she put herself first (literally) before the interests of the Village residents. Shameful, just shameful.

Just want to point out that this is the same newsletter that goes out at the same time every year April and October, so how is that politically motivated? I could see if they had never done it before... but its routine. suddenly getting information out to residents is a waste of money I guess that just tells you how transparent the tax reform party is, anyhow if there information is so educational why don't they give it to the patch more people probably read this over the newsletter anyway. I guess if the township won't publish it then we don't get to learn. I for one am not stupid and don't buy the fact that it was educational and has anyone ever thought that is is the responsibility as the ones elected to keep us informed. Time to get over this go back to the corner and cry, they could always ask the township to put it on the website if it so educational I am sure they won't mind.

And Suzanne objected strongly back in 2009 when Tolomei published the Newsline right before the election. She was pretty appalled by the political act. Seems she's done the same thing she objected to four years ago.
Resident 225 March 14, 2013 at 08:39 pm
The point being made isn't that this is a different newsletter but the timing of this edition of the newsletter. It would be a better move to delay the publication of the newsletter for a few days then publish it just before the election. If you're really learning a great deal from this newsletter then good for you. I read it and wonder why it's even published.
Resident 225 March 14, 2013 at 08:43 pm
Barb - I'm well aware of what I'm speaking about and as a township resident I don't see any benefit to this newsletter. Let's think out of the box and find a better way to communicate in this age of technology. Print is expensive. I probably won't find the info useful in any form but would appreciate the savings.

Knowing that it might have the appearance of electioneering, schedule it to go out the day or week after the election. The news contained in these newsletters (both township and village) should not be about the person sitting in the chair, but about the residents they serve. They can, and should be, written in a way that reflects that relationship and not as a 'look at me and what I've done for you, so I deserve for you to vote for me again' piece.

I am so tired of the lies posted by Barb Evans, Randy Abbot and the entire group. Randy was fired from the Ela Township Highway dept. because of an inability to work with others. Why would anyone think he can compete with the work ethic of Mr. Kruckenberg who performed in an admirable way.
Jim Tarbet March 14, 2013 at 11:53 pm
Without getting into politics, this is a timely communication from the Township to the taxpayers. The annual Township Meeting is mandated by law and must be held on a specific Tuesday. This year, it's on April 16 - one week after the election.
For those unfamiliar with them, these meetings are conducted BY the public [not the trustees] and are binding on the Township Board. What other way effectively informs the public of both the meeting and issues of substance?

I love that your vote is dependent on a newsletter...we are looking for educated voters. Thanks.
Anonymous March 15, 2013 at 02:34 pm
You are spot on! Everyone needs to be aware of these facts. Thank you.
Anonymous March 15, 2013 at 02:35 pm
If the only thing keeping the Ela Tax Reform party from getting into office is a newsletter, then they have a bigger issue.....
Lead Follow or Get Out of the Way March 15, 2013 at 02:58 pm
As Jim says, this is a communication tool. Isn't the purpose of the Newsletter to inform the residents about township services? In that case, let's try this...publish all the information you want to get across to residents by department, but don't ascribe it to any one office holder and no large photographs of the trustees either. "Just the facts Ma'am, just the facts." I think going forward, this should be the format for all publicly funded newsletters. Thoughts??

Makes sense!

You would "like to see Ela Tax Reform consider doing away with the township government" ??? Yes, because they are going to run for office and then fire themselves. You are hilarious. We would all really appreciate more educated comments from this "225" or none at all.
Anonymous March 25, 2013 at 06:24 pm
Resident 225- If you do not find any of the township information useful anyways, then it would be appreciated if you did not leave your meaningless comments on the Patch. Thanks.

Wow, this story really shows how selfish some people are now. The person who complained to theRead More police better hope he/she never needs any help or compassion from anyone or any organization. They don't deserve it. You were trying to have a great event and some hater couldn't put earplugs in their ears for one night of their life if they didn't like the noise. So sad. Way to go for your efforts though! Bob
