Demolition to Begin at Shuttered Restaurant

Before Thanksgiving, residents can expect to see Mexico Lindo building and adjacent residence razed; Comet Welding building will be next demolition in an effort to ready more downtown properties for future development.

In the coming weeks, residents who happen to be in downtown Lake Zurich can expect to see the former Mexico Lindo restaurant building, 35 N. Old Rand Road, and the attached residence in the bulldozed.

That’s because the environmental cleanup of the property recently was completed, which included the removal of asbestos in both buildings, according to Village Administrator Bob Vitas.

Vitas said the demolition should begin before Thanksgiving, which falls on Nov. 24 this year.

In addition, environmental cleanup will take place at the Comet Welding building, 16 W. Main St., also in the TIF district. Demolition of that building should be complete by spring 2012.

The property recently was vacated by former longtime tenants, Vitas said.

“The next step is the continuation of the environmental assessment leading to ultimate demolition, which lends both properties to their future reuse on Main Street, and at North and South Rand Road,” Vitas said.

Vitas added that future commercial redevelopment of these properties will help to increase property values of townhomes at the formerly defunct Somerset development, located on the north side of West Main Street.
