Lake Zurich Appoints Interim Fire Chief

Deputy Chief David Wheelock will assume leadership role in fire department when Chief Terry Mastandrea retires July 15.

The village board Tuesday ratified the appointment of Deputy Chief David Wheelock as interim fire chief after Chief Terry Mastandrea retires July 15.

Wheelock’s public safety career, which has spanned 32 years, began when he attended Lake Zurich High School.

“I started as a cadet in high school and immediately went to paramedic school after that; I always knew this is what I wanted to do,” Wheelock said.

Since 1997, Wheelock has been deputy chief, and has been second in command to Chief Mastandrea for the last 21 years.

“In all of my absences, Dave has always been the one to assume any of my responsibilities and he has been an integral part in building the department,” Mastandrea said.

When asked if he is interested in becoming the next fire chief, Wheelock said there is no question.

“This would be the culmination of my career, since I worked through the creation of the fire department,” Wheelock said.

Wheelock said he has met with a couple of trustees and plans to speak with the rest in the coming weeks to express his interest in permanently filling the role.

“I’ve clearly indicated I am ready and capable to hold this position,” Wheelock said.

The fire chief is appointed by the mayor and is subject to ratification by the entire village board.

Mastandrea’s retirement will be acknowledged formally at a Walk Out Ceremony at 4 p.m. July 15 at Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Station No. 1, 321 S. Buesching Road.

An open house and thank-you reception will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. July 16 at the Volunteer Firefighter Association Hall, 77 S. Old Rand Road, with presentations beginning at 5 p.m.
