UPDATED: Two D95 Schools Locked Down After Student Brings in Weapon

Two schools in Lake Zurich District 95 were placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after a student brought a weapon to school. The student left school grounds but was found and questioned by police. No threats against students or staff were ever made.

Update, 4 p.m. Tuesday

The Lake Zurich Police Department received information at about 10:08 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from a representative of Lake Zurich Middle School South that a student allegedly brought a weapon to the school.

The representative confronted the student regarding the allegation and the student ran out of the office area while being questioned. The student’s whereabouts were not immediately known, which prompted District 95 officials to put Lake Zurich Middle School South and Isaac Fox Elementary School into lockdown for the safety of students and staff.

Lake Zurich Police responded to Middle School South at 435 Cuba Road and initiated an investigation into the incident. A short time later, at approximately 10:40 a.m., the student was located by police while walking along Cuba Road and taken to the Lake Zurich Police Department.

Police determined the student had a weapon which was brought to the school to give to another student. The student did not make any threats to harm students or school officials. Police have not identified the weapon.

Police and school officials worked together effectively to resolve the incident and the lockdown worked as intended to keep the students safe. The Lake Zurich Police Department encourages all individuals to report any suspicious incidents to police and/or school officials. All incidents involving public safety are thoroughly investigated.

Statement from District 95 Supt. Mike Egan:

"While I am fully aware that this was a terrifying situation for many parents and also for some students, I want to point out that a situation such as this one is exactly why we have lockdown procedures."

"I am proud of our staff and students for their behavior today during this challenging situation, and I am also very appreciative of the service provided by the Lake Zurich Police Department in resolving this situation safely and quickly." 

Update, 12:40 p.m. Tuesday

The lockdown at Middle School South has now been lifted, according to the District 95 website: All students will resume normal classroom activities at both Middle School South and Isaac Fox.

Update, 12:30 p.m. Tuesday

Lake Zurich Police are currently interviewing an unidentified middle school student who allegedly brought a weapon to school. Cmdr. David Bradstreet told Patch the school notified police of the incident at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The student left the school grounds, but was apprehended by police shortly thereafter, said Bradstreet.

Police have not confirmed whether a weapon was located, or what kind of weapon may have been involved. The District 95 website indicates no weapons were used during the incident.

An alleged weapons incident in Lake Zurich School District 95 Tuesday morning resulted in a hard lock down at Isaac Fox Elementary School, which has since been lifted, and at Middle School South, which remains in place pending completion of a police investigation.

This communication is to inform you that Middle School South and Isaac Fox Elementary School were in a hard lockdown (code red) at approximately 10:35 this morning. The reason for the lockdowns is that a middle school student allegedly brought weapons to school. The student has been apprehended by the police. No weapons were used at any time during this incident. The hard lockdown has been lifted for Isaac Fox, which is now in a precautionary Shelter in Place lockdown (code yellow). Middle School South will remain in a hard lockdown until the police have finished investigating in the building. We will communicate with you again when the lockdowns have been lifted or when more information is available.
