The annual open house kicks off fire prevention week, a time to recognize the dangers that can occur in the places we feel the safest. According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires killed more than 2,500 people in the United States in 2011.
Families who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and are more likely to survive a fire. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in home fires by 50 percent and automatic sprinkler systems cut the rise of dying in a home fire by about 80 percent.
