The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) capped a two week long investigation with an arrest, seizure of 60.1 grams of smokable methamphetamine, $2240 USC, as well as scales and packaging material from a North Waukegan address.
On May 10, at approximately 12:30 p.m., SIU detectives took Naphtali Gube, 49, into custody at his home at 4231 Continental Drive, Waukegan. After obtaining entry to the home, detectives saw the precursor chemicals often associated with methamphetamine labs. Detectives immediately backed out of the home and contacted Waukegan Fire Department (WFD) officials in an attempt to determine the air quality in the house as well as the volatility of the chemicals. WFD determined the area to be safe. Sheriff’s detectives then contacted the Illinois State Police Meth Response Team (MRT) who responded to the home for a site clean-up. ISP officials removed the chemicals for proper destruction.
A subsequent search of the residence produced the methamphetamine, currency and paraphernalia.
Gube was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver (Class X), Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class I), and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Detectives discovered Gube was on bond from Cook County for the same charges. Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to deliver (Class X) and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class I). At the time of the Cook County arrest GUBE was armed with a handgun.
Sheriff Mark Curran praised the efforts of the Special Investigations Unit and the Highway Patrol Division who developed the original information from a traffic stop. Sheriff Curran stated, “To the best of my knowledge this is one of the largest recent meth seizures in Lake County. Law enforcement intervention turned a potentially highly dangerous situation into a orderly arrest and took toxic chemicals from a home in the middle of a residential area. This was an excellent piece of police work.”
