Deer Park Basement Fire Quickly Extinguished

A basement fire in Deer Park, this morning, was extinguished within 10 minutes of firefighter's arrival on the scene, however the home had significant smoke damage, according to David Pilgard, of Lake Zurich Fire Rescue.

Lake Zurich responded to 21452 Sumac Court in Deer Park, at 9:06 a.m., after homeowners smelled smoke. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the first-due officer reported visible smoke from the first floor front door with all occupants and animals accounted for, according to the news release from Lake Zurich Fire Rescue.

Upon entering the lower level, the fire officer reported that a sectional couch was on fire. Fire companies were required at the scene to complete extinguishment, smoke evacuation, overhaul, and fire investigation.  A box alarm was called (MABAS box 32-D2)  for hauled water and station coverage.

Pilgard said the fire was contained to the basement and extinguished within 10 minutes, however the residents were not able to occupy the home due to significant smoke damage.

Both homeowners were checked by paramedics on the scene and were released. One firefighter received a minor injury that did not require transport to the hospital. The cause of the fire was not determined and the insurance provider will calculate any loss figures.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department was assisted by the Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary, Countryside, Deerfield, Fox River Grove, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Long Grove, Nunda, Wauconda, and Wheeling Fire Departments.   

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department reminded residents to review the location, use and condition of portable fire extinguishers located in the home. Additionally, be sure to test smoke detectors and CO detectors each month to ensure proper function. Those detectors found not operating properly should be immediately replaced.
