Rotary Drives to End Polio

Rotarians collected nickels and dimes (and dollars) to end polio worldwide, a feat that should be accomplished by 2020.

Recently, the Lake Zurich Rotary Club collected spare change on Village streets for its End Polio Now drive.  Generous motorists donated nearly $550 in just four hours, mostly in quarters and dimes.

Many people are surprised to learn that polio has not yet been eliminated.  It no longer occurs in most of the world, including the U.S., but is still present in four countries: India, Pakistan, Afganistan and Nigeria.  With enough vaccines, the crippling disease will disappear completely.  Its end is predicted before the end of the decade.

Every dollar collected through End Polio Now goes for vaccinations against polio.  Every dollar donated buys two vaccines. Since the funds are collected by volunteer Lake Zurich Rotarians, at no cost, funds for more than 1000 vaccines will be forwarded to Rotary International.

Rotarians John Casper, Rich Politowicz, Nancy Shepherdson, Dale Perrin, Dave Wheelock and June Fournier participated in the collection event.
