Every Team Needs a Quarterback

Families often need help caring for aging loved ones.

Those who have cared for aging parents or are currently doing so realize that the aging process can be very difficult.  The needs of elders can change quickly and reach a point where the family doesn't have the time or ability to comfortably address them.  In other cases, such as Alzheimer's, there is prolonged deterioration which can be draining on the family members who act as caregivers.

It is not uncommon to find family members in need of counseling and education.  They do not understand where their loved one is in the aging process.   They need to understand disease related implications today and in the future.  Where and how can their loved one live safely with social and mental stimulation.  Can they stay at home?  Can help be brought to them?  Do they need to move in with one of us?  How do we find competent help?  What are the financial implications?   Do all family members agree on spending their parents' money?  Will their loved one's funds last?   Can the siblings provide financial support if needed?

Caring for an elder can increase stress among family members, particularly blended families, as they attempt to agree on a cost effective plan of care.  Resentment towards the sibling who is trying to lead often emerges.  In other cases the adult children no longer live nearby and cannot offer assistance.  This can place an undue burden on the adult child or relative who lives closest.

Unfortunately our medical and health insurance systems are not designed to help families work through any of these issues.   So where can you turn for help?

Geriatric Care Consultants Managers (GCMs) are nursing consultants who help families develop and execute a cost effective care plan for their loved one.  We excel at playing the role of "Medical Quarterback."

We take a multi-step approach.  We start with a comprehensive evaluation of the senior which includes a review of their medications, prior and current medical concerns, overall safety and their emotional and cognitive needs.  We then develop a care plan and review it with the senior and the family members so they all understand the prognosis and plan moving forward.

When needed we provide family mediation to preserve the family unit and enable them to work toward providing their loved one with the care and dignity they deserve.  If there is a change in the elder's medical condition we discuss the options for further treatment and care.  We understand health insurance limitations and can review Long Term Health Insurance plans to ensure benefits are best utilized.

GCMs are a resource to arrange for any and all needs such as communication with doctors and coordinating appointments, bringing caregivers into the home,  medication management and assistance with preparation of legal documents to assure end of life issues have been addressed, etc.

Our goal is to assure seniors age with dignity and get the help they both need and deserve.  Does your team need a new quarterback?
